This is the third matchup in as many days between the two NL East powerhouses. The Mets won the series opener, 4-1, on Monday before the Braves won Tuesday’s meeting by the exact same score.

If the Braves win today, they can cut down the Mets’ divisional lead to just 0.5 games. However, New York also has the opportunity to create even more separation between itself and the red-hot Atlanta squad.

Can the Braves Beat Bassitt Again?

The first two contests of this three-game Mets vs. Braves series was dominated by pitching, leading to an average of five combined runs per game. Now, it’ll be up to Bassitt and Morton to continue that trend.

Unfortunately, Bassitt hasn’t had much success against the Braves this year. The 33-year-old righty previously faced the NL East rival team on May 2 at Citi Field. Even though the Mets were up 2-0 early on, Bassitt gave up three earned runs on six hits over seven innings, leading to his team losing 5-2.

The good news for the Braves is that Bassitt is looking vulnerable again. He’s gone 2-4 in his last six starts, giving up at least a trio of runs in three of his last five appearances. While the Mets have enough talent to dig the veteran hurler out of those situations, it’ll be a lot tougher to do if Morton can shut them down.

The Mets need Chris Bassitt to pitch better than he has lately.

Morton isn’t a stranger when it comes to facing the Mets. The two-time World Series champion has faced New York 15 times (14 starts) throughout his 15-year MLB career and has yielded solid results.

The 38-year-old is 3-4 in his meetings against the Mets, pitching to a 3.49 ERA while throwing 71 strikeouts over exactly 80 innings. He’s even been credited with the victory in three of his last seven games against New York.

Unfortunately, Morton didn’t perform well in his last tilt with the Mets on May 3. He surrendered four earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings, which played a role in his club’s 5-4 loss that day. Only time will tell if he can get that win back this afternoon.

Nevertheless, Bassitt and Morton both have something to prove against the opposite team on Wednesday. Only one side can walk out victorious and it could come down to which pitcher makes the first mistake.

This is one of those matchups that could, honestly, go either way. Both teams are good enough to walk out with the win, but I’m going with the Braves here. They’ve had the Mets’ number in their recent meetings at Truist Park and I think Morton gives them a solid shot at winning.

As for the best bet, I’m taking the Braves on the spread, as well as the total hitting under 8.5 points. There’s a history of low-scoring affairs between the two rivals and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
