Kirby Smart Calls Out Referees for Changing Call After Fans Disrupt Game with Trash

Kirby Smart: Refs set precedent by changing call after fans toss trash on field

Kirby Smart, the head coach of Georgia, addressed the issue of Texas fans throwing water bottles and other debris onto the field following a controversial interception call. Initially cautious in his response, he emphasized the importance of respecting the SEC office’s guidelines while hinting at the implications of such behavior. “I won’t comment because I want to respect the wishes of the SEC office,” Smart stated after the Bulldogs secured a 30-15 win over the Longhorns. “But I will say now we have a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, that you’ve got a chance to get your call reversed.”

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) later confirmed that the officials made the right decision by overturning the pass interference penalty with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter. The play involved contact between cornerback Jahdae Barron and receiver Arian Smith before the interception occurred.

According to the SEC’s statement, “The game officials gathered to discuss the play, which is permitted to ensure the proper penalty is enforced, at which time the calling official reported that he erred, and a foul should not have been called for defensive pass interference.” However, the league also noted that the fan disruption caused by the thrown items would be reviewed in relation to SEC sportsmanship policies.

“While the original evaluation and assessment of the penalty was not properly executed, it is unacceptable to have debris thrown on the field at any time,” the SEC emphasized. This statement underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment during games.

Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian expressed his frustration over the officials’ initial call, which negated Barron’s impressive 36-yard interception return. He was seen gesturing to the student section, urging them to calm down and cease the littering. “I understand the frustration,” Sarkisian acknowledged. “We all were frustrated in the moment. But all of Longhorn Nation, I know we can be better than that.”

As officials worked to clear the field, they ultimately decided to reverse the penalty. Smart, meanwhile, was engaged in a discussion with official Matt Loeffler, who indicated that the original penalty had been mistakenly assigned to the wrong player. “It took him a long time to realize that,” Smart noted, adding, “I guess the offensive guy. You know, 11 (Smith) and 7 (Barron), two distinct numbers. I don’t know in all of my coaching career if I’ve ever seen that happen that way.”

Sarkisian mentioned that the officials did not provide him with an explanation for the change in the call. Just a few plays later, quarterback Quinn Ewers connected with Jaydon Blue for a 17-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the score to 23-15 after the Longhorns had trailed 23-0 at halftime. “We were able to get that stopped and get that kind of taken care of and then regroup,” Sarkisian reflected on the situation. “Then they overturned that call, gave us an opportunity to get a short field and punch one in and close it to a one-score game.”
