Joe Thomas Talks Browns, Rising QBs, and His Madden Legacy: Insights from a Hall of Famer

Q&A with Joe Thomas: Hall of Famer on Browns, young QBs, Madden Ring of Honor, more

Retired Browns tackle Joe Thomas, a first-ballot member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has shifted his focus since stepping away from the game. At 40, he balances his time between broadcasting, coaching, and cherishing moments with his wife, Annie, and their four children.

FOX SPORTS: After seven years of retirement, what are your thoughts on the young tackles making waves in today’s NFL? Who stands out to you?

THOMAS: The league is filled with impressive young tackles right now. It’s exciting to see how they benefit from enhanced youth programs and development opportunities that simply weren’t available in the past. The offensive linemen summits initiated shortly after my retirement have fostered a valuable exchange of information, especially through social media. As offensive linemen, we constantly face faster, more athletic opponents, all training to target the quarterback. We need all the support we can get.

FOX SPORTS: Is there a particular player who stands out to you in today’s game?

THOMAS: I’ve admired players like Lane Johnson and Trent Williams for some time, but Penei Sewell really catches my eye. He’s been a joy to watch in Detroit, especially under the guidance of my friend Hank Fraley, who is coaching him. Sewell is evolving into the All-Pro player many anticipated. Tristan Wirfs is another standout who consistently dominates at the tackle position.

When evaluating offensive linemen, consistency is key. While big pancake blocks are impressive, the ability to provide the quarterback with reliable time and space is paramount. Jordan Mailata, who transitioned from rugby to winning the Super Bowl, plays left tackle at an elite level. Rashawn Slater, often overlooked this year, is destined to become one of the great tackles in the NFL.

THOMAS: Stability at the offensive coordinator and head coach positions is crucial because the quarterback is the most influential player on the team. Their confidence can be fragile, so having a consistent voice guiding them through the ups and downs of the game is essential. I think about Peyton Manning, who faced struggles early in his career but overcame them to become one of the all-time greats. Having experienced individuals in the quarterback room, like a seasoned backup, can provide invaluable support during tough times.

FOX SPORTS: What role does the offensive line play in supporting a quarterback? In Tampa, Baker Mayfield’s close bond with his offensive line is evident. How does that connection help?

THOMAS: The offensive line’s primary responsibility is to protect the quarterback. When linemen genuinely care for their quarterback, they are motivated to go the extra mile to ensure his safety. Defensive players only need to slip through once for a big play, so the offensive line must be alert and ready at all times. This connection fosters a sense of loyalty and commitment to protecting their quarterback.

FOX SPORTS: Which young quarterbacks have impressed you recently?

THOMAS: Caleb Williams is a name to watch, especially with Ben Johnson now in Chicago. If they can provide him with solid protection, it would be exciting to see him showcase his skills. His college performance was remarkable, and he has the potential to shine in the NFL. C.J. Stroud has also shown promise, surrounded by a solid team. Overcoming adversity will be key for him as he aims to establish himself as one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

FOX SPORTS: Durability and resilience are vital in the NFL. You played your first 10,000 snaps without missing any. What contributed to your longevity?

THOMAS: Luck certainly played a role, but my physical build helped. Staying aware of my surroundings on the field was crucial. Understanding where players might be allowed me to avoid dangerous situations. I also prioritized taking care of my body through stretching, yoga, and recovery techniques. I wish I had access to the nutrition knowledge available today, but I was diligent in my approach to training and recovery. My mindset was always to stay on the field unless someone told me otherwise.

FOX SPORTS: You mention the physical toll of your playing weight. How does it feel to have shed those extra pounds since retiring?

THOMAS: Losing weight has been liberating. The demands of maintaining my playing weight were exhausting, especially with the unhealthy foods I had to consume to meet calorie requirements. After my retirement, I lost about 50 pounds in six months, and my knee pain improved significantly. Now, at around 250 pounds, I feel much better and more mobile, free from the daily discomfort I experienced as a player.

FOX SPORTS: This week, you received a notable honor by being inducted into the Madden NFL Ring of Honor as its first offensive lineman. Were you a fan of the game during your playing days?

FOX SPORTS: Did the Madden designers accurately portray you in the game?

THOMAS: I always appreciated how the Madden ratings reflected my performance. It was nice to have that recognition and enjoy some friendly banter in the locker room about it.

FOX SPORTS: Having spent your entire career with one team, how much pride do you take in that achievement?

THOMAS: It’s incredibly meaningful to me. There were moments when I could have sought a trade, but my heart was always in Cleveland. From the day I was drafted, my goal was to help turn the franchise into a winner. The bond I formed with the city and its fans was special, and I wanted to be part of that journey. I often share this sentiment with players like Myles Garrett, emphasizing the importance of building a legacy with one team.

FOX SPORTS: What do you think the Browns need to achieve the success you envisioned for the franchise?

THOMAS: The key is finding a reliable quarterback. A few years back, Joe Flacco led the team to the playoffs with many of the same players. The pieces are there, and now it’s about securing consistent play at quarterback. With the No. 2 pick in the draft, the opportunity to find that player is promising. If they can establish stability at that position, I believe the Browns can return to playoff contention and beyond.

FOX SPORTS: You played alongside 21 quarterbacks during your tenure with the Browns. How many can you recall?

THOMAS: I’ve tried to remember them all, and I’d say I can recall about half. I remember the first and last ones best. I started with Charlie Frye, who was traded the day after my rookie season began. Then there were Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, and Ken Dorsey, among others. Some names blur together, especially those who only played a game or two. I always feel bad if I forget someone, as every player contributed to our journey.

FOX SPORTS: You’ve named 14 right there, which is impressive.
