Former Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has joined FC Barcelona after announcing his retirement in August. This decision comes as the team seeks to fill the gap left by the injured Marc-André ter Stegen.
Having stepped away from professional soccer after his tenure with Juventus, Szczesny expressed that it would be “stupid” to pass up the opportunity presented by Barcelona.
A significant influence on his decision was his former Poland teammate, Robert Lewandowski, who was among the first to reach out to Szczesny about the possibility of returning to the field.
“It took some convincing,” Szczesny shared. “Initially, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for new challenges. However, after discussing it with my family and friends, they all agreed that I would be making a mistake by not accepting this chance. I decided to go for it.”
Barcelona acknowledged that the 34-year-old goalkeeper arrives “in unusual circumstances,” but emphasized that his extensive experience and impressive career history speak volumes.
Szczesny expressed pride in his new role, stating, “I was genuinely ready for retirement and content with my decision. I wouldn’t take this step for anyone else. It’s an exciting challenge, and I approach it with enthusiasm and energy. I’m ready to give it my all.”
Barcelona confirmed that Szczesny’s contract will extend until the end of the current season.
Marc-André ter Stegen, a key player and captain, recently underwent surgery for a ruptured tendon in his right knee and is expected to be out of action for several months.
Since Ter Stegen’s injury, Iñaki Peña has taken on the starting goalkeeper role. Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick has shown support for the young Peña but recognized the need for an experienced goalkeeper in the squad.
Szczesny was present at Barcelona’s impressive 5-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League, where he observed the match from a VIP section at Montjuic Stadium.
With a rich career that includes stints at Arsenal and 84 appearances for the Polish national team, Szczesny has participated in two World Cups and four European Championships, showcasing his extensive experience on the international stage.
