Jayden Daniels Shines in Preseason Debut, Igniting Excitement for the Season Ahead!

The 'buzz' about Jayden Daniels keeps building after impressive preseason debut

The buzz about Jayden Daniels keeps building after his impressive preseason debut, leaving fans and analysts alike optimistic about the Washington Commanders’ future. East Rutherford, N.J., has witnessed a summer filled with hope as Coach Dan Quinn and his team envision a brighter path forward—one they believe is finally within reach. A single play from rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels can ignite that hope into something tangible.

What sparked much of the excitement was that the deep pass was not part of the original play call.

Quinn humorously referenced the movie ‘Top Gun’ after the Commanders faced the Jets, saying, “I thought of, ‘Do I have permission to buzz the tower? No, Ghostrider, the pattern is full.’ It seems Jayden wanted to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.”

The new head coach appreciated the boldness of his 23-year-old quarterback. Daniels explained that while offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury initially called for a screen pass, he recognized it would likely result in a dead play. Instead, he opted for a better option, showcasing his ability to adapt and make plays happen.

Throughout the summer, there has been an undercurrent of belief at the Commanders’ training camp in Ashburn, Virginia. Many are convinced that Jayden Daniels is the answer to their long-standing quarterback woes.

Veteran receiver Terry McLaurin expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s hard not to be excited. I’ve played with many first-time quarterbacks, but he plays like he’s been in this league before.”

Quinn echoed this sentiment, admitting, “I had high expectations for him coming in, but he has exceeded my expectations regarding his readiness and command.”

During the preseason game, Daniels not only audibled into a 42-yard completion but also demonstrated resilience. His initial pass—a poorly executed screen—went over running back Austin Ekeler’s head. However, he quickly bounced back, completing a significant pass on the next play.

He also delivered a perfectly timed throw to McLaurin for a critical 3-yard gain in the red zone, contributing to an efficient 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that culminated in Daniels scoring on a three-yard run.

Daniels showcased only a fraction of his skill set, as his offensive line held firm, limiting the need for off-schedule throws. Most run-pass option plays resulted in handoffs, with the exception of his touchdown run, which caught the Jets defense off guard, allowing him to stroll into the end zone untouched.

His performance has sparked a renewed sense of hope within the organization, something that has been absent for years.

Commanders guard Sam Cosmi remarked during the game broadcast, “I think everybody should be very excited about that little sneak peek. I know I am, and the guys are fired up. We’ve got a player back there.”

Even Sauce Gardner, a standout cornerback for the Jets, approached Daniels post-game, acknowledging, “You’re going to be real good.” The belief among the Commanders’ players is that Daniels will develop into a formidable quarterback sooner than anticipated.

Quinn noted, “They all have real trust in him.”

This trust is evident in Quinn’s reaction to Daniel’s audibling on his third NFL play, which he felt was justified due to the freedom Kingsbury had granted him in practice. If the throw hadn’t been “an absolute dime,” leading to a significant gain, Quinn might have felt differently.

Daniels has proven capable of making pivotal plays and demonstrating an awareness that belies his inexperience.

Quinn reflected, “It was a really cool play. It illustrates his awareness and the checks that go into it. He didn’t ask for permission; he buzzed the tower anyway.”

If he continues to perform at this level, Quinn may very well allow Daniels to buzz the tower as often as he wishes.
