Broncos head coach Sean Payton experienced an emotional win against the Saints during his return to the Superdome. Arriving six hours early for the game, he took the time to reflect on his 15-year coaching tenure in New Orleans, where he led the team to significant success. His return was marked by a decisive victory for the Denver Broncos, further enhancing the emotional weight of the occasion.
“Coming back here is different and kind of special,” Payton remarked, highlighting the unique bond he shares with the city and the organization.
“To be with this team and this ownership group — that’s what you miss. One year out, and you miss the relationships. You miss making memories. … Being around young players and being part of their journey is a rewarding experience. I’m grateful for it. Yes, it was quite emotional.”
After the Broncos secured a 33-10 victory, Payton received the game ball from his team, expressing that it “meant a lot” to him.
Rookie quarterback Bo Nix showcased his skills by passing for 164 yards and rushing for 75 yards, leading Denver (4-3) to a commanding statistical advantage over New Orleans (2-5). The Broncos outgained the Saints 389 yards to 271, marking New Orleans’ fifth consecutive loss. Running back Javonte Williams contributed two touchdowns, while linebacker Cody Barton scored on a 52-yard fumble return.
Nix praised Payton’s legacy, stating, “It was awesome. The Saints mean a lot to him. He was there for a while and had amazing success,” referencing Payton’s franchise-record 152 regular-season wins from 2006 to 2021 and his Super Bowl victory in 2009. “I’m happy for him.”
Denver’s defense, ranked fourth in the NFL for yards allowed prior to the game, recorded six sacks, further demonstrating their dominance.
At halftime, the Saints honored former quarterback Drew Brees by inducting him into their Hall of Fame. Payton, who coached Brees during his time in New Orleans, expressed that it’s “always good” to see the legendary player.
During Payton’s tenure as head coach of the Saints (2006-2021), the team achieved remarkable success, including winning Super Bowl XLIV, nine seasons with 10 or more wins, and nine playoff appearances. The Saints recorded a regular-season record of 152-89 and a postseason record of 9-8 during his 15 seasons, excluding the 2012 season when he was suspended.
After stepping down as head coach following the 2021 season, Payton returned to the sidelines in 2023 when the Broncos traded a first- and second-round draft pick to the Saints for his services, along with a third-round pick.
In his first season with the Broncos, Payton guided the team to an 8-9 record.
As the season progresses, the fortunes of the two teams appear to diverge; the Broncos have won four of their last five games, while the Saints are mired in a five-game losing streak and are currently without veteran quarterback Derek Carr due to an oblique injury.
After the game, Saints head coach Dennis Allen, who served as Payton’s defensive coordinator in New Orleans, warmly embraced his former colleague. With this victory, the 61-year-old Payton became the first head coach to defeat all 32 NFL teams.
