Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had stroke earlier this month, expected to make full recovery

Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has been sidelined from the San Antonio Spurs due to a mild stroke he experienced earlier this month, as announced by the team on Wednesday.

In his 29th season as head coach of the Spurs, Popovich’s return to the court remains uncertain. The incident occurred on November 2 at the Spurs’ home arena, and the organization is optimistic about his full recovery.

At 75 years old, Popovich holds the record as the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and has led five Spurs teams to championship glory. He has already begun a rehabilitation program, demonstrating his commitment to recovery, according to team officials.

The Spurs expressed gratitude for the support and privacy extended to the Popovich family during this challenging time, highlighting the community’s respect for their situation.

In Popovich’s absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped up as the acting head coach, taking on the responsibility of leading the team during this period.
