Every week, FOX Sports NFL reporter Peter Schrager shares insights from his notebook, highlighting three major storylines shaping the league.
1. Vance Joseph’s Resurgence
The Denver Broncos’ defensive performance this season is a remarkable story that deserves more attention. Vance Joseph, a seasoned NFL coach with two decades of experience, returned to the Broncos as defensive coordinator after a challenging stint as head coach from 2017 to 2018. His previous tenure ended abruptly, but he accepted the chance to return in a different capacity under head coach Sean Payton. Initially, the decision raised eyebrows, especially after a dismal 70-point loss to the Dolphins last season.
However, a turning point came when the Broncos managed to stifle Patrick Mahomes in a surprising victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. This marked Mahomes’ first loss to Denver, signaling a shift in momentum. As the 2023 season progressed, Joseph’s defense evolved into a formidable unit, ranking third in the NFL for total defense (256.5 yards per game) and scoring defense (13.8 points per game). With rookie quarterback Bo Nix adjusting to the NFL, Joseph’s defense has become a crucial element in the team’s recent three-game winning streak.
This year’s narrative in Denver is compelling. While Nix and Payton grab headlines, Joseph’s journey of redemption is equally significant. If the current trend continues, Joseph, who has long yearned for another head coaching opportunity, could soon find himself a candidate once again.

2. Buffalo’s Big Gamble
The upcoming Bills-Jets matchup is charged with tension and implications for the AFC East. A loss could send shockwaves through Buffalo, especially after two disappointing performances. The Bills’ recent blowout defeat against the Ravens served as a wake-up call, while the loss to the Texans raised further questions about their play-calling and execution.
The concern for the Bills is their roster’s depth in playmakers. After leading the league in scoring early in the season, their offensive production has dipped. As tensions rise, the absence of key players like Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis could haunt the team. With the trade deadline approaching, fans wonder if Buffalo will pursue a veteran receiver to bolster their offense. While there is no immediate panic, a defeat to the Jets could trigger alarms in Western New York.
General manager Brandon Beane has previously expressed reluctance to emulate the Rams’ all-in strategy. However, if the Bills continue to falter, a more aggressive approach might be necessary.

3. Jayden vs. Lamar
As the Washington Commanders face off against the Baltimore Ravens, the matchup between their quarterbacks is drawing significant attention. Both Jayden Daniels and Lamar Jackson bring distinct styles and skills to the game, making this one of the most anticipated clashes of the season. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how these two talented players will perform under pressure.
Bonus Stat of the Week
Washington has made history as the first team since 1970 to score over 150 points in their first five games while starting a rookie quarterback.
