Week 5 NFL QB Power Rankings: Lamar Jackson Shines as the League’s Elite Once More!

2024 NFL QB Power Rankings Week 5: Lamar Jackson playing like best in NFL, again

2024 NFL QB Power Rankings Week 5 highlight Lamar Jackson playing like the best quarterback in the league once again.

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix all secured victories this week. However, it’s important not to overreact to their current standings in the rankings. Only one player made a significant leap, while another experienced a notable decline. This week was particularly intriguing for these emerging talents, especially as they navigate their roles in the NFL.

Let’s explore their positions in the QB Stock Market alongside the veterans.

In these rankings, this week’s performance accounts for 30% of the total score, while the remaining 70% reflects the overall performance in 2024. The key question remains: What have these players done for their teams lately?

Previous weeks: 1, 2, 3, 4

The Cincinnati Bengals face a dilemma regarding Lamar Jackson this week.

There are no easy answers.

In his matchup against the Buffalo Bills, Jackson exploited every weakness the defense presented. He capitalized on gaps in the zone, targeted favorable matchups in man coverage, and seized every chance to run the ball.

2. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers ( 4)

When Patrick Mahomes struggles, many look for glimpses of his brilliance in other players. This week, Brock Purdy shone brightly.

Yes, this is indeed the same Brock Purdy.

During the 49ers’ opening drive, Purdy faced a collapsed pocket on third-and-9 from the Patriots’ 21-yard line. Despite not being the largest quarterback, he managed to evade defenders and maintain his composure.

This is when his improvisational skills came into play.

Rolling to his left, Purdy directed George Kittle downfield, demonstrating their strong connection. As they executed a scramble drill, Purdy made an impressive throw while shifting his body, placing the ball where only Kittle could catch it. This smart play resulted in a crucial first down.

Purdy currently holds the second-highest passing EPA (21.7) in the NFL and ranks second in passing yards. He has also showcased his mobility, gaining eight first downs on 18 carries. Remarkably, he has thrived despite injuries to key players like Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, as well as contract disputes impacting the team.

Purdy has emerged as a stabilizing force for the 49ers, even as they navigate some early-season challenges.

3. Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings ( 1)
4. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills ( 3)
5. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders ( 2)

Daniels continues to improve as a rookie.

He displays a refined understanding of the pocket, not only locating open receivers but also aiding them in creating separation with his deceptive gaze. Additionally, he poses a significant threat with his running ability. There’s potential for this rookie to ascend the rankings in the coming weeks.

6. C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans ( 5)
7. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers ( 13)
8. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals ( 4)
9. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys ( 1)
10. Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks ()

11. Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints ( 11)
12. Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets ( 9)
13. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions ( 2)

Goff showcased exceptional performance this week.

Despite a challenging season, he delivered an outstanding performance against the Seahawks. His stats were impressive:

18 completions on 18 attempts
292 passing yards
2 touchdowns
155.8 quarterback rating

After catching a touchdown in the third quarter, Goff became one of the Lions’ leaders in receiving touchdowns. While initially a point of humor, he quickly shifted the narrative with a deep throw to Jameson Williams, who then claimed the lead in receiving touchdowns.

Although Goff’s season has been underwhelming, he certainly made a statement in Week 4.

14. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs ( 1)
15. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams ( 10)
16. Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers ( 5)
17. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers (new)
18. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals ( 4)
19. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles ( 1)
20. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers ( 4)

The video of Herbert smashing his helmet on the sideline during the Chargers’ loss to the Chiefs has likely circulated widely.

While Herbert may not openly express his frustrations, several factors could be contributing to his discontent:

1) His top receiver is a rookie.
2) He competes in the same division as Patrick Mahomes.
3) He faces off against Andy Reid.
4) He has only 91 pass attempts this year (28th among QBs).
5) His EPA stands at 6.9 (26th among QBs).
6) His head coach’s strict approach limits his ability to impact the game.
7) Mike Williams is no longer on the team.
8) Keenan Allen has moved to another franchise.
9) Patrick Mahomes remains a constant threat in his division.
10) Lastly, Herbert is a Charger.

Quarterbacks have the potential to transform franchises, and Herbert was on that path until coaching changes stifled his growth. While he may be winning games, it’s worth pondering if this is truly fulfilling when he can’t play to his full potential.

21. Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons ( 12)
22. Daniel Jones, New York Giants ( 6)
23. Andy Dalton, Carolina Panthers ( 4)
24. Jacoby Brissett, New England Patriots ( 1)
25. Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars ( 1)
26. Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears ( 2)

Even in quick plays, Caleb Williams struggles with speed.

While showcasing his arm strength, he often misses the mark, throwing inaccurately to open receivers.

Williams faces challenges with anticipation throws and struggles to connect with wide-open targets.

At times, he is slightly too slow, while at other moments, he is excessively fast.

Yet, when he performs well, he is undeniably impressive.

There remains potential for his growth, but the journey ahead is more challenging than anticipated.

27. Gardner Minshew, Las Vegas Raiders ()
28. Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts ( 1)
29. Bo Nix, Denver Broncos ( 6)
30. Will Levis, Tennessee Titans ()
31. Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns ()
32. Tyler Huntley, Miami Dolphins (new)
