Top 6 Wide Receiver Trade Targets for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs Following Rashee Rice’s Injury

Six WR trade targets for Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs after Rashee Rice injury

Six wide receiver trade targets for Patrick Mahomes emerge as the Kansas City Chiefs reassess their roster following the injury to Rashee Rice.

Entering Week 4, the Chiefs struggled offensively, with Rice standing out as a bright spot. Unfortunately, the team now faces the potential loss of Rice due to an expected ACL injury, leaving them scrambling for solutions.

Despite their undefeated record of 4-0, the Chiefs are grappling with significant offensive uncertainties. The recent acquisition of Hollywood Brown is in jeopardy due to a shoulder injury, while running back Isiah Pacheco is sidelined with a cracked fibula, likely out for eight weeks. Travis Kelce’s performance has also been below par this season.

These challenges have culminated in what is arguably Patrick Mahomes’ most challenging start in his eight-year career.

To alleviate Mahomes’ struggles, bolstering the receiving corps is essential, especially if the Chiefs aim for a third consecutive Super Bowl title. Various trade options present themselves, although the prospect of acquiring a player like Davante Adams may not be feasible.

With only $4.9 million in cap space this year and $27 million available next year, the Chiefs face financial constraints. Mahomes’ contract is nearly maxed out in terms of restructuring, limiting General Manager Brett Veach’s options for freeing up significant funds.

The Chiefs can certainly pursue a receiver before the November 4 trade deadline. However, if they seek a high-profile player, they may need to part with additional assets to facilitate a deal, especially for someone like Adams. Alternatively, they might consider players whose salaries align with both short-term and long-term strategies. Notably, veteran receivers Michael Thomas and Hunter Renfrow are currently available as free agents.

Here are six potential trade targets the Kansas City Chiefs might explore, ranked from most to least likely.

1. Demarcus Robinson, Rams

Robinson may not replicate Rice’s production, but he can fill a possession role within the offense. Earning just $2.5 million this season, he represents a low-risk option that Coach Andy Reid might consider if he seeks stability in the receiver room.

Conversely, the Rams could offer Tutu Atwell instead. Atwell has shown promise but is lower on the depth chart. His speed and youth may overlap with Chiefs rookie Xavier Worthy, making this a complicated decision.

2. Amari Cooper, Browns

Cooper could transform the Chiefs’ offense, making him an exciting prospect. With a salary of just $1.2 million, he remains one of the NFL’s premier route runners. He has the potential to thrive in Kansas City’s system, especially with a quarterback like Mahomes.

If the Chiefs choose to keep him, they could extend his contract midseason. Alternatively, if they view him as a one-year rental, they could let him walk in free agency while potentially receiving a compensatory pick.

The only concern would be how quickly Cooper could adapt to Reid’s playbook. However, his talent makes him a worthwhile addition.

Furthermore, there’s speculation that the Browns might offer Elijah Moore instead of Cooper. Moore, a slot receiver, has struggled to find his place in Cleveland’s offense but could thrive in Kansas City.

The potential acquisition of Cooper represents a significant move for the Chiefs, one that could pay off in multiple ways.

3. Darius Slayton, Giants

While acquiring Slayton would be a challenge, the Giants may be inclined to evaluate their young receiving talent, which includes Malik Nabers and Jalin Hyatt. If the Giants’ front office feels secure in their positions, they might be open to trading Slayton.

Slayton offers a balanced option, possessing more talent than Robinson but not quite matching Cooper’s skill set. He could be a cost-effective addition for the Chiefs.

4. Jonathan Mingo, Panthers

Mingo, who caught the Chiefs’ attention during their pursuit of Kadarius Toney, has shown flashes of potential in his rookie season. Unfortunately, the Panthers have not utilized him effectively, leaving him buried on the depth chart.

If Carolina seeks to capitalize on Mingo’s value before he becomes a long-term backup, the Chiefs might see him as a valuable asset. He could provide the physical presence Mahomes needs in the slot.

5. DeAndre Hopkins, Titans

The prospect of acquiring Hopkins raises questions about the draft compensation required. Would a third-round pick suffice to bring the veteran to Kansas City on a veteran minimum salary?

While this option ranks lower due to potential costs, for a team focused on achieving a third consecutive championship, it may be a risk worth taking.

6. Kyle Pitts, Falcons

While Pitts is primarily a tight end, his unique skill set could greatly enhance Reid’s offense. With a rookie contract expiring in 2025, the Falcons may be inclined to part ways with him, especially given his declining usage.

At just $1.05 million, Pitts presents an affordable option for the Chiefs. He could serve as a complementary piece alongside Kelce, providing valuable depth in the passing game.

While Pitts ranks low on this list due to his position and potential trade value, his addition could be a game-changer for Kansas City, especially in the long run.
