Chicago Bears vs. Indianapolis Colts Prediction and Picks - September 22, 2024

Week 3 of the NFL season is upon fans, featuring an intriguing contest between the Chicago Bears (1-1, 2-0 ATS) and the Indianapolis Colts (0-2, 1-1 ATS). The last encounter between these franchises took place in 2020, where the Colts secured a nine-point victory on the road. Following a narrow defeat to the Texans last Sunday night, Chicago is looking to bounce back after falling 19-13, managing to cover the spread as 6.5-point underdogs. On the other side, Indianapolis lost to the Packers 16-10, failing to capitalize as 2.5-point favorites. As the teams prepare to clash, the Colts enter this matchup as 1.5-point home favorites. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM EST at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and the game will be broadcast regionally on CBS.

Chicago’s Offensive Line Under Pressure

The Bears currently hold a 1-1 record, but their vulnerabilities were glaringly highlighted during last week’s televised game. Quarterback Caleb Williams struggled significantly against the Texans, frequently evading pressure only to find himself in challenging situations. With 274 passing yards accumulated over two games and yet to register a touchdown, Williams’ performance has been underwhelming. He faced a tough outing against Houston, where he was sacked seven times in the loss.

Williams’ performance included two costly turnovers, resulting in two interceptions. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus commented on his play, emphasizing, “He was able to evade the rush and get on the perimeter a few times, but then he has to be careful with the football when he gets out there. So, there were some great learning moments for him.” DJ Moore has emerged as a primary target, leading the team with 11 receptions for 89 yards. Rookie receiver Rome Odunze recorded the longest catch of the season with a 27-yard reception, though he has been hampered by a knee injury. Veteran wideout Keenan Allen was unavailable last Sunday and remains questionable for this game. In terms of rushing, Williams leads with 59 yards, while D’Andre Swift has managed 48 yards but averages only 2.0 yards per carry.

Defensively, the Bears boast two standout linebackers, TJ Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds. Edwards leads the squad with 23 tackles, while Edmunds contributes with 15 tackles and a sack against the Texans. As a team, Chicago has tallied six sacks so far, with edge rusher Darrell Taylor leading with two in his inaugural season with the Bears after joining from Seattle. They have also secured two interceptions, with star cornerback Jaylon Johnson snagging one in Week 1.

Injury Report:

Questionable: WR Keenan Allen, WR Rome Odunze, G Teven Jenkins, DE Montez Sweat, DT Zacch Pickens

Colts’ Missed Chances Haunt Them

Despite a winless start at 0-2, the Indianapolis Colts could have turned the tide in their favor early in the season. In their season opener against the Houston Texans, who are favored to win the AFC South, the Colts fought hard but fell short by just two points. The following week, they faced the Packers, missing Jordan Love, yet only managed to score 10 points, leading to another disappointing loss. As of now, the Texans sit atop the division at 2-0, leaving the Colts and other teams struggling at 0-2. Jonathan Taylor highlighted the Colts’ offensive potential, rushing for 103 yards against the Packers despite the defeat.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson expressed frustration over the team’s slow start, stating, “We know we’re better than that. It just hurts losing, bro. Nobody wants to lose. I know we’ve got 15 more [games], but, man. Losing the first two definitely hurt.” While Richardson possesses athleticism, he has yet to demonstrate consistency. His current completion rate stands at 49.1%, with 416 passing yards and a 3-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Alec Pierce has become his primary target with 181 receiving yards, while Michael Pittman Jr. has lagged behind with just 52 yards over two games. Taylor continues to lead the backfield, totaling 151 rushing yards across both contests.

On the defensive front, Indianapolis has performed decently, allowing an average of 19.5 points per game. Third-year safety Nick Cross leads the team with 29 tackles. However, the secondary has yet to record an interception. The Colts have secured four sacks, with DeForest Buckner contributing 1.5 before being placed on injured reserve due to a high ankle sprain sustained against the Packers.

Injury Report:

Questionable: DE Laiatu Latu

Out: DT DeForest Buckner

Expert Predictions: Chicago Bears vs. Indianapolis Colts

The Bears are currently getting a 1.5-point spread, making a bet on Chicago’s money line at +110 an attractive option. Notably, only one game in the first two weeks ended with a one-point differential, which was won by the underdog (Atlanta over Philadelphia). Caleb Williams faced significant pressure against the Texans, leading to seven sacks and limited downfield options. The Colts, however, face their own struggles with injuries on the defensive front. Buckner’s absence due to an ankle injury will impact their pass rush, while Laiatu Latu’s potential absence could further weaken their defense. This situation may provide Williams with the breathing room he needs to find success in the passing game and possibly achieve his first touchdown.

On the Colts’ side, Richardson has the potential for explosive plays, yet his inconsistencies have hindered offensive flow. His chemistry with Pittman Jr. remains untested, as he seems to favor Alec Pierce. With the Bears likely to improve their performance, they are expected to secure a victory on the road.

Take Chicago to win.
