Haason Reddick remains in a contract holdout from the New York Jets as the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers approaches, now just days away.
The experienced edge rusher has been absent for 43 days, leaving the Jets to prepare for their Monday night matchup without him. The team is gearing up to face a tough opponent in San Francisco, which adds pressure as they navigate the situation without Reddick’s presence on the field.
When asked if having Reddick available would be a “bonus” for the opener, Coach Saleh responded with humor, likening it to “finding change in the couch.” He affirmed Reddick’s talent, emphasizing that his eventual return would only enhance the team’s performance.
While the 49ers welcomed All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams back to finalize a new contract, Reddick stands out as the only player in the league still holding out. His situation raises questions about the dynamics of team negotiations and player commitments.
Reddick, celebrating his 30th birthday this month, requested a trade on August 12. However, Jets General Manager Joe Douglas swiftly dismissed that idea, stating that the organization would not accommodate his request. Douglas reiterated that the resolution lies with Reddick, expressing hope that the situation would be resolved soon.
Saleh last communicated with the two-time Pro Bowl player before training camp in July. Since April 1, when his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles was finalized, Reddick has not been seen at the Jets’ facility in Florham Park, New Jersey.
The coach stated, “There’s no disappointment,” focusing instead on the players present and ready to contribute. He expressed optimism that Reddick would eventually join the team and emphasized the Jets’ commitment to supporting him in achieving both his goals and those of the team.
Reddick is in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract, with a non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25 million for this season. He was placed on the reserve/did not report list shortly after camp began, complicating the Jets’ defensive strategy.
The Jets had envisioned Reddick teaming up with Jermaine Johnson to create a powerful edge-rushing duo. With Reddick’s absence, New York has turned to players like Micheal Clemons, Will McDonald, and Takk McKinley to fill the gap.
Coach Saleh reassured fans, stating, “We’ve got plenty to go rush the passer.” However, with time running short before the season opener, the uncertainty surrounding Reddick’s participation looms large.
Last Tuesday, Saleh mentioned that Reddick still had “plenty of time” to get ready for the matchup against the 49ers. However, as days pass without his return, the likelihood of his participation diminishes.
“Really, it’s going to be all dependent on how he looks if and when he shows up,” Saleh noted, indicating that Reddick’s readiness would be evaluated upon his arrival. The coach expressed a willingness to work with the training staff to assess Reddick’s fitness and plan accordingly.
