Patrick Mahomes gives $5 million to Texas Tech to support a $242 million renovation of the south end zone at Jones AT&T Stadium and the Dustin R. Womble Football Center. This generous donation reflects his ongoing commitment to his alma mater and aims to enhance the facilities for future generations of athletes.
Located in Lubbock, Texas, Texas Tech announced that several key areas within the football center will be named in Mahomes’ honor. These include the walkthrough area, the quarterback meeting room, and the office of the offensive coordinator. Mahomes played for the Red Raiders from 2014 to 2016 before declaring for the NFL draft a year early, ultimately being selected by the Chiefs in the first round of 2017.
As a two-time league MVP, Mahomes has played a pivotal role in leading the Kansas City Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, including the last two championships. His accolades also include three Super Bowl MVP awards, two first-team All-Pro selections, and being named to his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl last season.
Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire praised Mahomes, stating, “There isn’t a greater ambassador for Texas Tech athletics than Patrick Mahomes. He is arguably the best brand in sports, not only for his success on the field but for what he and his family do off it.” This sentiment underscores the quarterback’s influence both in sports and within his community.
Mahomes’ contributions to Texas Tech are already visible at Jones AT&T Stadium. In July, the school entered a 10-year partnership with Adidas, which features co-branded apparel that showcases Mahomes’ signature “gladiator” logo. This logo, along with the Adidas emblem, is now painted on the stadium turf following a recent NCAA rule change allowing corporate logos on the field.
The quarterback remains a regular presence at Texas Tech events. Over the past three seasons, he has returned during the Chiefs’ bye week to support his former team. Notably, in 2022, Mahomes was inducted into the school’s ring of honor and Hall of Fame. He also attends various sporting events, including baseball and basketball games, and has been spotted at the Big 12 Tournament, which takes place near Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
With this latest donation, Mahomes has helped Texas Tech raise a total of $115 million for the stadium and football center initiatives. His support signifies a full-circle moment, as Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt noted, “When we first launched this campaign, Patrick was only a freshman, and now it is fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of his own. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global scale.”
