49ers Set to Showcase Brock Purdy and Key Starters Against Saints This Sunday!

49ers plan to play Brock Purdy, other starters Sunday vs. Saints

The San Francisco 49ers plan to play Brock Purdy and several other starters in an exhibition game against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. This decision comes after the team had to cancel joint practices earlier in the week due to a series of injuries.

Typically, Coach Kyle Shanahan allows his starters significant time during joint practices, sometimes opting to rest them during the game that follows. However, he believes it is essential for his players to face a different opponent, which is why many top players, including Purdy, will take the field this Sunday.

Brock Purdy expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming game, stating, “It’s always nice when you get to go up against a different look, different guys and stuff. We definitely missed that this week. But at the same time, we’re doing it for the right reasons. I’m excited for Sunday to be able to get some new looks and run our offense against guys that haven’t seen it every day.” Purdy emphasized the importance of efficiency and competitiveness during the game.

However, not all starters will participate. Some players are sidelined due to injuries, while others are engaged in contract negotiations. To mitigate any further injury risks, certain key players may be held out regardless of the game situation.

The 49ers faced another setback this week with left guard Aaron Banks suffering a broken pinky. After undergoing surgery on Friday, the team hopes to have him ready for the season opener against the New York Jets on September 9.

Shanahan provided little clarity regarding the status of key players Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, both of whom have not participated in practices this summer due to contract issues. Williams is currently holding out and accruing daily fines of $50,000, while Aiyuk has attended meetings but has not practiced.

Aiyuk was seen doing sprints on the sidelines during practice on Friday, but he continues to seek a resolution that could lead to either a new contract with the 49ers or a potential trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Shanahan clarified that the organization has not threatened Aiyuk with fines for his absence, as he has reported an injury preventing him from participating. “I think B.A. has a sore back right now, and it is what it is,” Shanahan remarked.

The coach noted he has not pressured the front office regarding Aiyuk’s contract demands, understanding that these negotiations are part of building a competitive roster for the long term. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “You have to know the big picture and it all ties together. You want every player in camp and healthy, but that’s not the reality of our league.”

While Shanahan remains uncertain about Aiyuk’s future, he is optimistic about reaching a deal with Trent Williams, who has been a standout left tackle for the past three seasons.

In other news, safety Talanoa Hufanga has received clearance to advance in his rehabilitation from a torn ACL suffered last year. He is set to participate in individual drills next week, with the possibility of returning to full practice soon after.
