Ex-UNC Basketball Star Joins Division I Coaching Staff

Shammond Williams Joins University of Denver Coaching Staff

Former UNC basketball guard Shammond Williams will bring his coaching expertise to the University of Denver as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season. With over a decade of experience in college basketball, Williams has previously coached at Furman, Tulane, and Western Kentucky. Recently, he’s been part of the Old Dominion women’s basketball team. Under head coach Jeff Wulbrun, who recently led the Pioneers to a historic Summit League Championship Game, Williams is ready for his new role in Denver.

Williams expressed his excitement about joining the Pioneers in a statement released by University of Denver Athletics. He praised Coach Wulbrun as both a great coach and an exceptional person, emphasizing Wulbrun’s reputation for caring about his players and staff. Williams also acknowledged his positive experience working with Delisha Milton Jones at Old Dominion and looks forward to contributing to the Denver team. His family is eager to return to the Mile High City and become part of the Pioneer family.

The addition of Williams, a three-time Final Four player with UNC, comes on the heels of another UNC legend’s coaching appointment. Jerry Stackhouse was recently named to the Golden State Warriors coaching staff. With Williams’ extensive background and experience, he aims to help the University of Denver’s basketball program reach new heights and possibly make a significant impact in the NCAA tournaments.
