D’Angelo Russell Opts In for Return to Lakers

Lakers’ Russell Opts Into Final Contract Year

Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell has decided to stay with the team, opting into the final year of his contract, securing $18.7 million. Despite some trade discussions aimed at upgrading the point guard position, Russell’s strong performance last season, averaging 18.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds, indicated his value to the team.

After drafting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the Lakers still have flexibility with two future first-round picks, which could lead to potential trades. This could significantly alter the lineup, especially with Russell’s expiring contract as a valuable trade asset.

With the coaching change to JJ Redick, who emphasizes 3-point shooting, Russell’s skill set comes into focus. Last season, he set a new Lakers record with 226 made 3-pointers, aligning with Redick’s vision for the team’s offensive strategy.
