Knicks offering Mitchell Robinson in trades ahead of free agency

Knicks Face Tough Decision Between Robinson and Hartenstein

Keeping Isaiah Hartenstein may cost the Knicks Mitchell Robinson. With the Knicks keen on retaining Hartenstein, whose offensive skills have shined, they are exploring trading Robinson. Yahoo sources reveal that the Knicks have engaged in discussions with other teams about Robinson, hoping to keep Hartenstein amid potential free agency competition.

Robinson, a defensive staple for the Knicks, has two years remaining on his $60 million contract. However, his health issues raise concerns, as he’s played only 90 games since signing the extension and missed significant playoff time due to a serious ankle injury. Meanwhile, Hartenstein has been remarkably consistent and productive, averaging 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game over two seasons. His durability and performance make him an attractive option for the Knicks, who are limited to a maximum offer of $72.5 million over four years due to salary cap constraints.

The decision is pressing, with other teams like the Thunder also expressing interest in enhancing their rosters. Free-agent big men such as Nic Claxton and Jonas Valanciunas are also in demand, suggesting a competitive market. The Knicks may find themselves among several teams trading for size, including potential moves involving Brook Lopez, Clint Capela, or Walker Kessler. Robinson’s trade could emerge as part of a broader strategy to balance offensive and defensive needs while managing salary cap limitations.

This off-season will be critical for the Knicks, as they aim to make strategic choices about their roster’s future composition. With health and performance on the line, the balance between Robinson’s defensive prowess and Hartenstein’s offensive reliability could define their next steps.
