Meet Travis Hunter: The Game-Changing NFL Prospect Colorado Can’t Stop Raving About!

Why Colorado's Travis Hunter is an unprecedented NFL prospect

Travis Hunter is an unprecedented NFL prospect, showcasing a rare blend of skills that sets him apart from his peers in college football. As a standout player for the Colorado Buffaloes, he has redefined the expectations for two-way athletes in the game today.

For those who might think this assessment is simply another case of media hype, it’s worth recalling that I first spotlighted Hunter last September. At that time, I advocated for his Heisman candidacy and projected him as a potential first-round NFL draft pick.

In his latest performance during Colorado’s 48-21 triumph over UCF, Hunter delivered an impressive display. He caught nine passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing defensively with tackles, a pass breakup, and a remarkable interception. Hunter’s versatility was on full display as he participated in 128 of the game’s 143 total snaps.

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn highlighted Hunter’s exceptional talent, stating, “He’s just an elite player, and it’s really impressive to see what he’s doing playing that many snaps. Since I’ve been in college football, I’ve not seen it.”

Malzahn further emphasized that Hunter is consistently the standout player on film, reinforcing the notion that he is indeed an elite talent in college football.

Hunter’s ability to excel on both sides of the ball is not new. He leads the nation with 652 snaps played this season, according to Pro Football Focus, a trend he continued from last year, including in Colorado’s stunning season-opening victory over TCU.

What truly sets Hunter apart is not just his ability to play two positions for the 4-1 Buffaloes, but the exceptional level at which he performs in both roles.

A remarkable case of quantity and quality

If Hunter concentrated solely on one position, his talent could easily earn him a top-10 draft selection. However, if NFL teams believe he can maintain his dual-threat capability at the professional level, he could very well be the No. 1 overall pick, as I indicated in my early mock draft.

While some may argue that it’s unrealistic for Hunter to continue playing both positions in the NFL against elite competition, the potential for specially designed plays or packages that utilize his unique skill set remains a possibility.

The ball skills and athleticism to play both ways

Hunter’s abilities are not just a matter of opinion; even his offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, recognizes his extraordinary talents. Shurmur, who has extensive coaching experience with teams like the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants, has praised Hunter’s skill set to NFL scouts visiting Boulder.

“I’ve said this to all 32 NFL teams, but he has some superpowers,” Shurmur remarked. “His most obvious one is his ball skills. He gets interceptions as a defensive player.”

While ball skills are typically associated with wide receivers, Hunter excels in that area as well. His ability to make difficult catches look effortless has drawn comparisons to last year’s top draft pick, Marvin Harrison Jr.

Shurmur also noted Hunter’s effectiveness as an open-field tackler, further showcasing his versatility.

“He knows where he’s supposed to be and makes tackles when it’s time to tackle,” Shurmur added. “Anytime you can affect the ball, that’s really good.”

In Colorado’s recent victory over Baylor, Hunter demonstrated this ability by forcing a game-sealing fumble at the goal line, contributing significantly to his team’s success.

The instincts and awareness to play both ways

Recognizing Hunter’s physical gifts alone would underestimate his football IQ. He possesses remarkable instincts and awareness, allowing him to anticipate plays effectively. His recent interception against UCF is a prime example of this rare talent.

One can hardly blame Hunter for celebrating with the Heisman pose after such a play.

It all adds up to … top grades at both CB and WR

This unique combination of awareness and athleticism gives him a slight edge in grading as a cornerback. Regardless of his position, Hunter stands out as an exceptional and unprecedented NFL prospect.

This is why Colorado fans, along with college football enthusiasts everywhere, should appreciate the “Heisman Hunter” while they can.

Before long, NFL scouts will be flocking to Boulder, eager to witness and recruit Hunter and his extraordinary abilities for the professional stage.
