USMNT Dominates Costa Rica in Thrilling January Camp Finale!

USMNT routs Costa Rica to close January camp with a second straight win

USMNT routs Costa Rica to close January camp with a second straight win, triumphing 3-0 in a friendly match held in Orlando. This victory marks a strong start for the United States men’s national soccer team as they look to build momentum heading into 2025.

With key players like Christian Pulisic and several others occupied with their European clubs, USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino opted for an all-MLS starting lineup. Brian White, a forward for the Vancouver Whitecaps, ignited the scoring midway through the first half. CF Montreal’s Caden Clark then extended the lead with a goal in the closing minutes, while Charlotte FC’s Patrick Agyemang capped off the performance with a stoppage-time goal, adding to the excitement of his previous international debut against Venezuela.

“We are very, very happy, very pleased with the performance,” Pochettino expressed during the TNT broadcast. “It feels like we have been working together for at least six months. I am most pleased with the performance, the attitude, and the ability to adapt to new ideas. This is a positive sign, as it shows that players are eager to earn a spot on the national team.”

Play of the Game

While Clark’s goal was impressive, White’s opener stood out. Real Salt Lake’s Diego Luna, who had just suffered a broken nose from an unnoticed Costa Rican elbow, delivered a brilliant no-look pass to White. White’s precise finish into the far corner showcased why he remains one of the top American strikers in the league.

“‘Please coach, let me keep playing,” Pochettino recounted Luna’s determination. After receiving medical clearance, Luna re-entered the game and immediately assisted on the next goal. “Big balls,” he added, highlighting Luna’s courage.

Pochettino praised Luna’s character, stating, “He’s a player we will certainly consider for the future.”

Turning Point

Zack Steffen, the former backup goalkeeper for Manchester City, made his debut under Pochettino during this match. Steffen, now with the Colorado Rapids, seized the opportunity.

As the U.S. held a narrow 1-0 lead, Steffen made two exceptional saves, one just before halftime, which helped maintain the advantage. His performance served as a reminder of his potential to secure a spot on the World Cup roster next year.

“Anything’s possible,” Steffen told TNT. “I felt good back there. It’s always nice to make some of those top-handed saves.”

Pochettino acknowledged Steffen’s quality, emphasizing his importance to the team.

Key Stat

This match marked Steffen’s first appearance for the national team in nearly three years, since March 30, 2022, during a World Cup qualifying match. Interestingly, that match was also against Costa Rica.

What’s Next for the USMNT?

The full-strength squad, including Pulisic and Weah, is set to reunite in March for the CONCACAF Nations League finals.

On March 20, the U.S. will compete against Panama at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The winner will advance to the final against either Canada or their long-time rivals, Mexico, three days later.

The USMNT is focused on capturing their fourth consecutive Nations League title.
