CINCINNATI — The U.S. men’s national team faced disappointment on Tuesday as they missed a potential game-winning goal from star forward Christian Pulisic, ultimately drawing 1-1 with New Zealand after conceding an equalizer in the 89th minute.
However, the focus shifted quickly from the match result to a significant announcement made just before kickoff. Mauricio Pochettino was officially named the new head coach of the USMNT, a move that has been anticipated for weeks.
Goalkeeper Matt Turner expressed the weight of this appointment succinctly, stating, “He’s one of the biggest names in management in all of soccer.”
While the team’s performance has been lackluster, following a historic group stage exit as Copa América hosts and a recent loss to Canada, Pochettino’s arrival could signal a turning point. The team showed improvement during Tuesday’s match, but with the 2026 World Cup approaching, they still have much ground to cover.
Pulisic shared his hopes for Pochettino’s impact, stating, “Hopefully [he’s] someone that’s going to come in and really change the culture around here. Something is missing. I can’t exactly explain it to you. I wish I could.”
Pochettino’s reputation precedes him, and players are eager to learn from him. Marlon Fossey, who made his international debut, noted, “Heard a lot of stories about him, about how he likes fitness a lot.” He added that Pochettino is known for being demanding yet effective in managing players.
Pulisic, who previously played under Pochettino’s management at Chelsea, mentioned that his former teammates spoke highly of the coach. “I’ve only heard good things, and I’m not just saying that,” he remarked.
Turner emphasized that Pochettino will bring a new level of intensity, stating, “Every game is an audition.” This sentiment reflects a shift in the team’s dynamics, as players understand that their positions are not guaranteed.
Chris Richards, who plays for Crystal Palace, acknowledged the challenge Pochettino presents, saying, “Difficult guy to play against, so I’m happy that he’s our coach.” He expressed optimism that Pochettino would help the team find a clear identity and stability moving forward.
