United States national team defender John Tolkin expressed his regrets regarding his previous social media activities following his recent transfer to Holstein Kiel in Germany.
On Friday, Kiel addressed the controversy surrounding posts that Tolkin had “liked” in the past, which touched on sensitive topics such as gender identity, the coronavirus pandemic, and various conspiracy theories.
“I regret that my past actions on social media may have hurt, irritated, or offended some individuals,” Tolkin stated in a message released by Kiel. “That was never my intention. I want to assure everyone that I respect all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
He emphasized that he does not “harbor any homophobic or discriminatory thoughts.”
Kiel confirmed that they had discussions with Tolkin regarding the posts, noting that he had “credibly explained” his lack of intent to offend.
“John aligns with the club’s philosophy, which includes a strong commitment to diversity, tolerance, and opposition to all forms of discrimination and racism,” the club stated. “We firmly believe that John is a player who fits well with Holstein Kiel, both in terms of sports and human values.”
This statement followed the 22-year-old defender’s recent signing with the struggling Bundesliga club, having transitioned from the New York Red Bulls. Since 2023, he has participated in four matches for the U.S. national team and is viewed as a reliable option for left back as the team gears up for the upcoming World Cup.
Tolkin played a pivotal role in all four U.S. matches at last year’s Paris Olympics, a competition primarily featuring under-23 players.
While with the Olympic squad in July, Tolkin publicly apologized during a CBS interview “to anyone I may have offended” due to his social media actions. “I recognize the responsibility that comes with my platform and understand that liking those posts on Twitter was not the best choice,” he remarked at that time.
