USMNT, Monaco striker Folarin Balogun doubtful for Arsenal return in Champions League

USMNT striker Folarin Balogun is doubtful for his return to the pitch against Arsenal in the Champions League after missing training with Monaco on Thursday. This setback comes as he continues to recover from a recently aggravated shoulder injury.

After being sidelined for nearly two months due to a dislocated shoulder, Balogun made his competitive comeback at the end of November. However, the latest injury has raised concerns about his availability for the critical match.

The American forward, who made a permanent switch to Monaco from Arsenal last year, played 68 minutes in a recent 2-1 defeat against Marseille before being substituted. Monaco’s coach, Adi Hütter, confirmed that Balogun took another hit to his shoulder during that match and has been experiencing ongoing pain.

“He was unable to finish practice yesterday due to the pain,” Hütter shared with the media. “He received treatment and stayed indoors today. I’m uncertain if he will be fit for Saturday’s game against Toulouse.”

Earlier this season, Balogun displayed impressive form, scoring in three consecutive games, including a notable performance in Monaco’s 2-1 victory against Rennes on October 5. Unfortunately, the injury forced him to withdraw from several matches with the U.S. national team.

“He is understandably frustrated because he worked diligently to return,” Hütter noted. “He put in a lot of effort during his rehabilitation, and now he’s dealing with this pain. We all hope he can make it back in time for Saturday.”

Born in New York and raised in London, Balogun signed a five-year contract with Monaco, marking a significant chapter in his career.

As both Arsenal and Monaco sit at 10 points after five matches in the newly structured Champions League, the upcoming clash at the Emirates promises to be a highly anticipated encounter, especially with Balogun’s potential absence.
