Jaguars Seeking Redemption After Near Miss

The Jacksonville Jaguars are determined to leave last season behind them. After starting strong with a 6-2 record, the team faltered in the latter half of the season, ultimately missing the playoffs. This year, they aim to reclaim their spot among the top teams in the division, as failing to reach the postseason again would be a significant letdown.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence displayed his potential in 2023, throwing for 4,016 yards, although a 21:14 touchdown-to-interception ratio indicates room for improvement. The offensive line struggled, leading to Lawrence being sacked 35 times.

Running back Travis Etienne Jr. has proven to be a consistent threat, rushing for over 1,000 yards in both of his NFL seasons. Last year, he recorded 1,008 rushing yards at an average of 3.8 yards per carry. The Jaguars’ receiving corps underwent some changes, losing their top receiver Calvin Ridley but adding Gabe Davis to the mix. Christian Kirk, who almost reached 800 yards last season despite a calf injury, is also expected to play. Last year, Jacksonville’s offense ranked 9th in passing yards but struggled with a 24th ranking in rushing.

On the defensive side, the Jaguars implemented significant changes, including the hiring of new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, who previously worked with the Falcons. The pass rush is led by Josh Hines-Allen, who recorded 17.5 sacks, while the secondary looks to improve with Tyson Campbell and veteran Ronald Darby. Last season, the Jaguars ranked 26th in pass defense but performed better against the run, placing 9th.

Jacksonville averaged 22 points per game, landing them in the 14th position overall, while allowing 21.8 points, which ranked 17th.

Dolphins Ready to Make Their Mark

The Miami Dolphins have set their sights higher this season, aiming for more than just a playoff appearance. Their goal is to capture the division title and secure wins in the playoffs after a disappointing wildcard exit last year. With a formidable roster, the Dolphins are considered strong contenders, particularly against the Buffalo Bills. Coach Mike McDaniel has assembled a group of talented playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had an impressive 2023 season, throwing for 4,624 yards and achieving a remarkable 29:14 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He reached the 300-yard passing mark in five games, showcasing his ability to lead the offense.

The Dolphins also excel in their rushing game. Veteran running back Raheem Mostert had a standout year, amassing 1,012 rushing yards at an average of 4.8 yards per carry. De’Von Achane made a significant impact as well, totaling 800 rushing yards in just 11 games. Miami’s receiving threats are formidable, with Tyreek Hill posting 1,799 receiving yards and Jaylen Waddle contributing 1,014 yards. The Dolphins led the NFL in passing yards and ranked 6th in rushing last season.

However, Miami’s defense faced challenges last year, prompting the hiring of new coordinator Anthony Weaver. Notably, Bradley Chubb, the team’s sack leader, is on injured reserve and will not participate in this game. The Dolphins boast elite cornerback Jalen Ramsey and added Kendall Fuller in the offseason, while safety Jordon Poyer bolsters their secondary. Miami’s pass defense was ranked 15th last season, while the rush defense held strong at 7th.

Last year, the Dolphins averaged 29.2 points per game, ranking 2nd overall, while allowing an average of 23 points, placing them 22nd.

Betting Insights for Jaguars vs. Dolphins

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins present a balanced matchup in terms of offense and defense. The Jaguars, eager to bounce back from last year’s struggles, are looking to start the season on a high note.

With Trevor Lawrence’s proven capability, having thrown for over 4,000 yards last season, Jacksonville could exploit the Dolphins’ average pass defense, which ranked 15th in 2023. The absence of Bradley Chubb will likely give Lawrence more time to make plays. The Jaguars’ running game led by Travis Etienne poses a threat as well, while their strong rush defense, ranked 9th last season, should effectively manage the Dolphins’ running backs, Mostert and Achane.
