UCLA coach Mick Cronin expressed frustration with his players after the 22nd-ranked Bruins suffered their third defeat in four games, emphasizing their lack of effort and toughness on the court.
Initially, the Bruins had a strong start, winning 10 of their first 11 games and beginning their Big Ten campaign with a 2-0 record. However, they have since faced setbacks, including a disappointing 94-75 loss at home to No. 24 Michigan on Tuesday night.
The team also struggled against Nebraska, losing 66-58 in a game that further highlighted their recent challenges.
“I find myself having to run onto the court to motivate players to give their all,” Cronin remarked. “It’s becoming absurd, and this happens every day. I bring more energy to practice than anyone else, and I’m frustrated with everyone in that locker room, including my coaching staff and the players.”
He pointed out that his team appears “too soft to play hard enough,” a reality that becomes evident during critical moments of the game.
“The truth is, it’s incredibly tough to coach individuals who are living in a fantasy,” he stated. “The hungry dog gets the bone. We have players who believe they are far better than they actually are. They are good kids, but they are completely out of touch with their true abilities.”
Cronin expressed hope that the loss to Michigan would serve as the “humble pie” his team needs. He is now on a quest to identify players who are willing to give their all and follow his guidance.
“At this moment,” he said, “I am deeply searching for players who can muster the effort necessary to secure a victory in the Big Ten.”
