Top 10 2025 NFL free-agent DBs: Vikings, 49ers face tough decisions

Top 10 2025 NFL free-agent defensive backs showcase significant talent, with the leading three hailing from franchises facing intense challenges in free agency. In the comprehensive Top 100 2025 free agents list, Byron Murphy Jr. stands out as one of six Vikings in the top 50, Charvarius Ward leads three 49ers in the top 26, and D.J. Reed ranks highest among eight Jets. The age-old adage rings true: you can’t keep them all. Yet, premium defensive backs often hold more value than nearly all other positions on the field.

(Top-100 ranking in parentheses)

10. Asante Samuel Jr., CB, Chargers (36)

At just 25 years old, Samuel faced a challenging 2024 season due to persistent stinger issues affecting his neck and shoulders. His absence was notably felt, but rookie Tarheeb Still stepped up impressively in his place. Samuel has indicated a desire to remain in Los Angeles, leading to speculation about whether he will opt for a multiyear contract in the $12-14 million per year range or choose a one-year deal to position himself for a more lucrative contract in 2026.

9. Carlton Davis, CB, Lions (33)

Davis, who was traded from the Buccaneers partly due to health concerns, made a solid impact with Detroit before a fractured jaw sidelined him during the playoffs. The 28-year-old has proven to be a reliable cover corner, earning a PFF grade that places him among the league’s top 21 corners. With the Lions having drafted two corners in the previous year, the question remains: will they choose to retain him or let him explore free agency?

8. Tre’von Moehrig, S, Raiders (32)

7. Camryn Bynum, S, Vikings (28)

Bynum, now 26, represents another significant decision for the Vikings. With three interceptions in 2024, he has tallied eight over four seasons. The organization may feel pressure to secure his services before free agency, especially if veteran Harrison Smith opts for retirement. If they fail to act, Bynum could emerge as one of the highest-paid safeties in this free-agent class, competing with Holland and Hufanga.

6. Talanoa Hufanga, S, 49ers (26)

Hufanga’s last two seasons have been marred by injuries, limiting his contributions significantly. After only seven appearances last season due to wrist and ankle issues, he also missed the end of 2023 due to an ACL injury. However, when healthy, the 25-year-old former All-Pro showcases remarkable playmaking ability, making him a critical asset for any team.

5. Justin Reid, S, Chiefs (21)

4. Jevon Holland, S, Dolphins (19)

Holland’s career has seen ups and downs, having adapted to four different defensive schemes since his entry into the league. Under Brian Flores in 2021 and Vic Fangio in 2023, he achieved impressive PFF grades of 84.7 and 90.4. However, his performances dipped under coaches Josh Boyer and Anthony Weaver, receiving scores of 72.3 and 63.0. Both Miami and Holland might benefit from a change, as he possesses the potential to become one of the league’s premier safeties—perhaps even in Philadelphia with Fangio.

3. D.J. Reed, CB, Jets (16)

2. Charvarius Ward, CB, 49ers (10)

Ward, San Francisco’s leading cover corner, faced a tumultuous season filled with personal and physical challenges, including a persistent hamstring injury and the heartbreaking loss of his one-year-old daughter due to heart complications. Despite these hardships, the 28-year-old managed to compile 54 combined tackles and seven pass breakups over 12 games. He has hinted at a desire for a fresh start, potentially seeking a new team after a difficult year.

1. Byron Murphy Jr., CB, Vikings (8)
