Three moves the Yankees must make after losing Juan Soto

Three moves the Yankees must make after losing Juan Soto focus on filling critical gaps in their roster. The New York Yankees face a significant challenge following Soto’s departure to the crosstown Mets. He and Aaron Judge had a historic offensive season, and now the team needs to regroup and strategize for the future. Replacing Soto’s production and maintaining competitiveness in the American League East are paramount for the franchise.

First, addressing the outfield situation is essential. The Yankees have a few options to fill the void left by Soto. Aaron Judge could return to right field, where he has extensive experience, while Jasson Domínguez, the top prospect, might take over center field. This adjustment would allow the Yankees to pursue free-agent left fielder Teoscar Hernandez. After a standout season with the Dodgers, where he hit 33 home runs and earned a Silver Slugger award, Hernandez could add significant power to the lineup. Alternatively, the Yankees could target Anthony Santander, a right fielder who also had a breakout year with the Orioles, hitting 44 home runs and driving in 102 runs.

Second, the Yankees must look at first base. With Anthony Rizzo’s future uncertain, the team should consider signing one of the top first basemen available, such as Pete Alonso or Christian Walker. Alonso, a fan favorite for the Mets, could provide the power the Yankees need, making his acquisition particularly enticing. However, securing him would require a significant investment, as he seeks a long-term deal. Walker, known for his consistent performance, is another viable option that could help fill the gap left by Soto.

Finally, starting pitching needs attention. The Yankees could benefit from adding a young arm like Garrett Crochet from the White Sox. At just 25 years old, he had a successful 2024 season, striking out 209 batters with a 3.38 ERA. Pairing him with established starters like Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón would create a formidable rotation capable of competing at the highest level.

In summary, the New York Yankees must strategically address their outfield, first base, and starting pitching needs in the wake of Juan Soto’s departure. By making calculated moves in free agency, they can strengthen their roster and aim for their first championship since 2009.
