Top Free-Agent Priorities for AL Central Contenders: Guardians, Royals, Tigers, Twins, and White Sox

Three biggest free-agent needs for Guardians, Royals, Tigers, Twins, White Sox

The three biggest free-agent needs for the Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, and Chicago White Sox are becoming clearer as the MLB winter meetings approach. Each team is looking to fill critical gaps that could enhance their competitiveness in the upcoming season.

Our series continues with a focus on the American League Central.

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS

2. An impact bat: The Guardians are in need of an impact bat to bolster their lineup. While Steven Kwan showcases unique skills and Josh Naylor adds some power, the middle of the batting order lacks intimidation beyond Jose Ramirez. Acquiring another strong hitter is essential. An everyday center fielder could be beneficial, allowing Lane Thomas to shift to right field, where he excels. However, the focus should primarily be on enhancing offensive production. Top prospects Travis Bazzana and Chase DeLauter are on the horizon, but a proven player could significantly elevate the team’s performance. A trade for Luis Robert Jr. could be a strategic move, given the Guardians’ prospect depth.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

2. Outfield: The Royals are seeking to upgrade their outfield, which recorded a wRC+ of just 78—the lowest outside of Colorado. Failing to secure a player like Anthony Santander, Teoscar Hernández, or Tyler O’Neill could hinder their progress. The Royals require a formidable presence in the lineup to enhance offensive depth and create scoring opportunities.

3. Relief pitching: The Royals added Lucas Erceg to the bullpen, making strides in their relief efforts. However, the bullpen still needs reinforcement. A reunion with Scott Barlow or Aroldis Chapman could be beneficial. Any addition that strengthens the bridge to Erceg, such as Chris Martin or Blake Treinen, would be valuable.

DETROIT TIGERS

MINNESOTA TWINS

2. First base: The Twins face a challenge at first base. While they might promote Jose Miranda, his defensive capabilities are limited, and he struggled against left-handed pitchers last season. Re-signing Carlos Santana, who recently earned a Gold Glove and boasted a .934 OPS against lefties, could provide a solid solution. Other economical options like Justin Turner or Josh Bell are also on the table, but a trade for Yandy Diaz would make a significant impact.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

2. Evaluate the young talent: The White Sox are at a pivotal moment in assessing their young talent. Key prospects like Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas need to demonstrate their potential. The performance of pitchers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith will also be under scrutiny. This evaluation phase is crucial for determining which players can contribute to the next competitive White Sox roster.

3. Add a couple of veterans to flip: The White Sox are not positioned to make high-profile free-agent acquisitions, but they could benefit from signing a few one-year veterans. These players could be developed and traded for prospects as the season progresses.
