Steelers reportedly reject Bears' trade request for head coach Mike Tomlin

The Chicago Bears have faced a setback as they reportedly had their trade request for head coach Mike Tomlin rejected by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to a recent ESPN report, the Bears reached out to the Steelers in hopes of acquiring Tomlin, but their inquiry was swiftly denied. Another NFL franchise also showed interest in Tomlin, who holds a no-trade clause, yet they too were unable to make a deal, as stated in the report.

Earlier this week, Tomlin made it clear that he is not open to trade discussions, advising teams to “save your time.”

Under Tomlin’s leadership, the Steelers have achieved an impressive 183-107-2 regular-season record, secured a Super Bowl XLIII championship, and notably, have never experienced a losing season since he took over in 2007. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, which adds an intriguing layer to their current situation.

The Bears finished the recent season with a disappointing 5-12 record, highlighted by a challenging 10-game losing streak. They are currently conducting a thorough search for a new head coach, interviewing candidates such as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, and former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, among others. The franchise parted ways with head coach Matt Eberflus after two and a half seasons, following their loss to the Lions in Week 13.

The next head coach of the Bears will inherit a talented roster, featuring standout players like quarterback Caleb Williams, who is projected to be the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, wide receivers DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, and cornerback Jaylon Johnson.

Currently, the Bears are one of five teams seeking a new head coach, along with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders. As of now, the New England Patriots stand out as the only team to have hired a new head coach during this coaching cycle, bringing in Mike Vrabel.
