UConn’s Liam McNeeley Shines in Debut at MSG: A Rising Star’s Unforgettable Moment!

A star is born: UConn’s Liam McNeeley embraces ‘great first experience’ playing at MSG. With just 20.4 seconds left on the clock, he tapped the rebound to himself and drew a foul, igniting a wave of celebration throughout Madison Square Garden. The atmosphere was electric as the crowd recognized that the No. 18 UConn team was on the verge of a remarkable victory. All that stood between them and a third consecutive win over a high-major opponent—having already triumphed against then-No. 15 Baylor and Texas—were two pivotal free throws from McNeeley. The true freshman, emerging as a key player for head coach Dan Hurley, confidently sank both shots, sealing a 77-71 victory over eighth-ranked Gonzaga and solidifying a season that had faced its challenges.

“His performance tonight should elevate him to the top of any rankings for the best freshmen in the country,” Hurley remarked, highlighting McNeeley’s versatility. “He contributes on both ends of the floor and excels on the boards. He’s not just focused on scoring, which is crucial given the pressure he faces as our second-best player after Alex.”

The excitement was palpable as UConn fans flocked to Grand Central Terminal hours before the game. They arrived on Metro-North Railroad trains packed with supporters dressed in festive attire for SantaCon NYC. For years, fans from Connecticut have made these trips to Madison Square Garden for significant games, whether during the Big East Tournament or high-stakes matchups like the Hall of Fame Series against Gonzaga. UConn’s frequent successes in this iconic venue have led to it being affectionately dubbed “Storrs South” by fans, a nod to the university’s campus in Storrs, Connecticut. Last year’s squad, which boasted a record of 37-3 and secured the program’s second consecutive national title, dominated their seven games at MSG, winning by an average margin of 14.3 points.

As fans chanted “UConn!” and “Huskies!” in a lively call-and-response at the train station, the excitement carried over into the arena. Nearly 19,000 spectators, many of whom had been celebrating for hours, transformed Madison Square Garden into a UConn stronghold. They jeered when Gonzaga took the court for warmups, drowning out the public address announcer. Cheers erupted when UConn’s players linked arms during a spirited rendition of the national anthem, showcasing the fervor of the crowd.

“It felt like a prize fight,” Gonzaga’s legendary coach Mark Few commented, capturing the intensity of the matchup.

The game concluded fittingly, with McNeeley dribbling out the final seconds of a victory that he significantly contributed to.

“I had never played in the Mecca before,” McNeeley shared, reflecting on his debut at Madison Square Garden. “But it was a fantastic first experience.”
