Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith left the field during a challenging 30-13 defeat against the Green Bay Packers due to a knee injury.
The injury occurred when Smith was struck low by Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, causing Cooper to roll over Smith’s ankle. In a moment of frustration, Smith limped off the field, tossing his helmet as he approached the sideline. He later exited the field, supported by trainers on his way to the locker room.
Following the incident, Smith did not return to the game. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided an update, stating that Smith’s knee “structurally … looks like it’s OK,” offering a glimmer of hope amidst the disappointment.
Macdonald praised Smith’s toughness, saying, “This guy is probably the toughest player I’ve ever been around. It was severe enough for him not to come back in the game.” This statement reflects the respect Smith has earned over his career for his resilience and commitment.
In Smith’s absence, Sam Howell, acquired in an offseason trade from the Washington Commanders, stepped in as the quarterback. Howell had only played one snap for the Seahawks prior to this game, and the pressure was on as the team trailed 20-6. He struggled to find his rhythm, completing just 5 of 14 passes for a mere 24 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.
Before his injury, Smith was having a solid season, ranking second in the league for attempts, completions, and passing yards. However, he faced challenges during the game, throwing his fourth interception in the end zone this season. His stats showed he completed 15 of 19 passes for 149 yards and the interception.
