Saquon Barkley: The Unmatched Force Redefining NFL Value

Why a 'special' Saquon Barkley is the NFL's Most Valuable Player

Saquon Barkley is the NFL’s Most Valuable Player for a reason. When Jalen Hurts faced a concussion on Sunday afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves in a precarious situation. They were leading against Washington, but without their starting quarterback, the team felt the pressure mounting.

In that critical moment, Barkley stepped up. On the Eagles’ eighth play after Hurts left the field, he took a handoff from backup quarterback Kenny Pickett. He charged up the middle, made a sharp cut to the left, froze a defender in his tracks, and burst through a gap in the Commanders’ defense. Barkley’s 68-yard touchdown run was exactly what the Eagles needed, showcasing his ability to carry the team when it mattered most.

Although the Eagles didn’t win that game, Barkley’s impact on the season has been undeniable. His presence has revitalized an offense that struggled the previous year. With Barkley leading the charge, the Eagles have transformed into a dominant force on the ground, establishing a powerful identity and positioning themselves as Super Bowl contenders.

Despite the NFL’s tendency to favor quarterbacks for the MVP award, Barkley stands out this year. He has surpassed 100 rushing yards in ten of his fifteen games, including an impressive 255-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Rams just before Thanksgiving. His ability to score multiple touchdowns in six games and control the clock during crucial moments, like the final 10:29 against the Steelers, highlights his versatility. Furthermore, he is only the third running back in NFL history to achieve four touchdowns of 60 yards or more.

Barkley’s arrival from the New York Giants was a game-changer for the Eagles. In a league that often overlooks running backs, the Eagles committed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with him, including $26 million guaranteed. Right tackle Lane Johnson emphasized this commitment, stating, “A lot of it was, we’ve got Saquon Barkley back there. Let’s f—ing give him the ball.”

As the Eagles leaned into their running game, they found their identity through Barkley. While they boast a talented roster, including Hurts and standout receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, it is Barkley who embodies their essence. His explosive runs can wear down defenses and turn the tide of a game at a moment’s notice.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged Barkley’s skill set, noting, “He’s got top-end speed. He can hit the home run. He’s good in tight spaces. He can get downhill. He can lower his pads. He’s just a really complete player. He’s been dominant. Eye-opening at times.”

In Philadelphia, Barkley has consistently been a reliable teammate. When Hurts has faced challenges, Barkley has been there to support him. His leadership qualities have shone through, making him a positive influence in the locker room since day one.

“His will and want-to is on display 24-7,” said left tackle Jordan Mailata. “It doesn’t stop, it doesn’t waver. He’s very encouraging, always talking to us.” Barkley’s ability to connect with his teammates has further solidified his role as a leader.

Joining a team filled with players accustomed to winning, Barkley quickly made his mark. Coming from a struggling Giants team, he embraced the challenge and demonstrated his commitment to winning. “I love being in that (MVP) conversation,” he stated. “But if you tell me that I could have the year I’m having and win an MVP but not win a Super Bowl, or I can have the year I’m having and not win MVP or offensive player of the year and win a Super Bowl, I’m going to take the other one.”

Barkley’s first impression as an Eagle was one of awe at the talent surrounding him. His new teammates recognized his exceptional skills, realizing they had never played alongside a player of his caliber. “Saquon,” head coach Nick Sirianni remarked, “is a special player.” This sentiment resonates throughout the organization, as they understand that Barkley’s potential has only begun to shine now that he’s part of a winning team.
