This victory marks a historic moment for the Red Bulls, making them the first No. 7 seed to reach the championship match. They join the 1998 Chicago Fire as the only teams to achieve three consecutive playoff wins on the road.
Coach Sandro Schwarz, who transitioned from Germany’s Hertha BSC to lead the Red Bulls, has demonstrated remarkable leadership. Under his guidance, the team overcame second-seeded Columbus, the defending champions, in the first round and secured a 2-0 semifinal victory against No. 6 seed New York City FC at Citi Field.
Coronel, in his ninth playoff appearance with the Red Bulls, showcased his skills by saving three shots, achieving all three of his clean sheets this postseason.
The Red Bulls gained the upper hand in the 47th minute when Reyes scored his first postseason goal with a well-placed header, assisted by fellow defender John Tolkin’s free kick. Tolkin’s assist marked his third in nine playoff appearances, following his previous contributions last season.
On the other side, Pedro Gallese, in his 11th playoff start with Orlando City, finished the match without a save. He had previously allowed only one goal in four playoff starts this season.
The Red Bulls have consistently made the playoffs since 2010, and this marks their second trip to the MLS Cup final, following their loss to the Columbus Crew in 2008. This season’s conference final appearance is their first since 2018.
