Jose Altuve: The Final Link to the 2017 Astros Legacy

Post-Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve is last position player from infamous 2017 Astros

Post-Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve stands as the last position player from the notorious 2017 Houston Astros. Earlier this week, Bregman finalized a significant three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, marking a pivotal moment in MLB free agency.

With Bregman’s departure, Altuve, a celebrated second baseman and three-time batting champion, remains the sole survivor from the Astros’ 2017 World Series-winning roster. This championship team, however, faced scrutiny when it was revealed during the 2019-20 offseason that they had engaged in an illegal sign-stealing scheme during the 2017 season, which aimed to gain an unfair advantage by deciphering opposing pitchers’ signals.

Here’s how the rest of Houston’s positional core has fared since that controversial championship:

SS Carlos Correa

OF George Springer

Springer signed a lucrative six-year, $150 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2020-21 offseason. As a two-time Silver Slugger and four-time All-Star, he continued to make an impact in the outfield, primarily playing center field from 2021-22 and shifting to right field thereafter. However, injuries have plagued Springer, causing him to miss significant time in 2021 and 2022, culminating in a career-low batting average of .220 in 2024.

1B Yuli Gurriel

OF Josh Reddick

Reddick was a notable offseason acquisition for the Astros during the 2016-17 offseason, securing a four-year, $52 million contract. His best performance came in 2017, when he recorded 82 RBIs and a batting average of .314. Reddick played out his tenure with Houston from 2017-20, providing stability in right field. He last appeared in the majors with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021.

DH/C/OF Evan Gattis

Gattis, who began his career with the Atlanta Braves (2013-14) before joining the Astros (2015-18), was a consistent offensive threat. Over his four seasons in Houston, he averaged 24 home runs, 73 RBIs, and posted a .245/.298/.471 slash line. Known for his powerful hitting and distinctive style, Gattis left the league after the 2018 season and has not played since.

Gonzalez’s versatility was unmatched; he played all four infield positions and both corner outfield spots for the Astros from 2012-18. His peak performance came in his last two seasons with the team, where he achieved a career-best .907 OPS in 2017, averaging 20 home runs and 79 RBIs. After leaving Houston, he spent time with the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees.

C Brian McCann

McCann, a six-time Silver Slugger and seven-time All-Star, was a key veteran presence for the Astros during their championship run. In 2017, he contributed significantly with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, playing a crucial role in both offense and defense. After two seasons in Houston, he returned to the Braves for his final year in 2019.

OF/DH Carlos Beltran

Beltran joined the Astros on a one-year, $16 million contract, primarily serving as a mentor for younger players. In his final MLB season, he hit 14 home runs and 51 RBIs. Following his retirement, Beltran transitioned into a role as a special advisor for the New York Yankees and later became the manager of the Mets, though he was dismissed shortly after due to his involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

OF Jake Marisnick

Marisnick, who was acquired from the Miami Marlins, provided depth in the outfield during his time with the Astros. Posting a career-best .815 OPS in 2017, he played with Houston until 2019 before moving to several other teams. His last appearance in the majors was in 2023.
