A small plane circled MetLife Stadium about 90 minutes before the New York Giants were scheduled to face off against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The aerial banner called for team co-owner John Mara to make significant changes to a franchise that has only reached the playoffs twice since their Super Bowl victory in February 2012.
“Mr. Mara, enough. Please fix this dumpster fire!” the banner proclaimed, trailing behind the small aircraft as it flew above the stadium.
The Giants entered the matchup with a dismal 2-10 record and were enduring a seven-game losing streak, placing coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen under intense scrutiny. New York finished the 2023 season with a 6-11 record after a promising playoff run in Daboll’s inaugural season, where they posted a 9-7-1 record. The team had only qualified for the postseason once before since their Super Bowl 46 win, which was in 2016.
The 2022 season had offered fans a glimmer of hope, highlighted by a playoff victory against the Minnesota Vikings—the first such win since the 2011 playoffs.
In a surprising turn, the organization released quarterback Daniel Jones less than halfway into his four-year, $160 million contract. On November 22, the Giants informed him he would not return to play this season, leading Jones to request his release from Mara. Just a week later, he joined the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad.
