Pete Alonso stays with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal after lingering on the market. A source, speaking on condition of anonymity Wednesday night, confirmed that the agreement, first reported by The New York Post, is contingent upon a successful physical examination.
The contract includes a $10 million signing bonus, with Alonso set to earn $20 million this year and $24 million in 2026. Importantly, he has the option to opt out after the 2025 season, allowing him to re-enter free agency.
In addition, the Mets had extended a three-year offer worth $71 million, featuring salaries of $27 million in 2025 and $22 million in each of the subsequent two years, with opt-out clauses after the first two seasons, according to the source.
Alonso, who celebrated his 30th birthday on December 7, found himself on the market longer than other prominent players. Notably, fellow free-agent first basemen Christian Walker signed a $60 million, three-year deal with Houston, while Paul Goldschmidt (New York Yankees) and Carlos Santana (Cleveland) opted for one-year contracts.
Steve Cohen, the Mets’ owner, expressed his concerns about the current contract structures, stating, “I don’t like the structures that are being presented to us. It’s highly asymmetric against us and I feel strongly about it. I will never say no. You know, there’s always a possibility.”
He further noted, “But the reality is that we’re moving forward and we continue to bring in players. As we continue to bring in players, it becomes harder to fit Pete into what is a very expensive group of players that we already have.”
Over his six seasons with the New York Mets, Alonso has hit 226 home runs and earned four All-Star selections. However, his strikeouts have increased, culminating in a career-high 172 last year, while his OPS dipped to a career-low .788.
Affectionately known as the Polar Bear, Alonso has become a beloved figure at Citi Field, cherished for his contributions as a home-grown talent.
He was recognized as the National League Rookie of the Year in 2019, achieving a .260 batting average, a major league-high of 53 home runs—setting a rookie record—and 120 RBIs. His highest RBI total came in 2022, reaching 131.
In 2023, Alonso batted a career-low .217, hitting 46 home runs and driving in 118 runs. This year, he recorded a .240 average, with 34 homers and 88 RBIs. Notably, a three-run homer in the ninth inning against Devin Williams propelled the Mets past Milwaukee in the decisive third game of their NL Wild Card Series.
Following their defeat against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series, the Mets made significant roster moves, acquiring players such as Soto and right-handers Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, and Griffin Canning, along with left-hander A.J. Minter. They also re-signed left-hander Sean Manaea, right-hander Ryne Stanek, and outfielder Jesse Winker.
