Pelicans suspend Zion Williamson for 1 game due to repeated tardiness

The New Orleans Pelicans have suspended power forward Zion Williamson for one game due to repeated tardiness, violating team policies ahead of Friday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

This season, Williamson has been late to several team practices and flights, which ultimately resulted in this disciplinary action.

Coach Willie Green addressed the situation, stating, “There were several occasions that led up to this and that’s how we got to this decision.” His comments came just before the game against the 76ers.

In a statement, the 24-year-old player expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to team owner Gayle Benson and the Pelicans organization. “I take full responsibility for this suspension,” Williamson said. “I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to Mrs. Benson, my teammates, and coaches, and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”

Williamson recently showcased his exceptional skills with a spectacular dunk against the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking his return from a 27-game injury absence. This electrifying moment included a 360-degree rotation while executing a double-clutch slam that thrilled the audience.

In addition to his dazzling dunk, Williamson recorded six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block against Wolves center Rudy Gobert. He energized the crowd further with a two-handed dunk off an alley-oop from CJ McCollum.

However, he will miss the upcoming game against the Portland Trail Blazers for rest, resulting in two consecutive games away from the court.

The Pelicans are set to play again on Sunday against the Boston Celtics.

Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin commented on the suspension, stating, “This one-game suspension is a result of failing to meet our team standards. His dedication to this organization is of paramount significance to us and to him. He has taken accountability for his actions and reaffirmed that commitment to the team today. I’m confident he will continue to evolve positively on and off the floor.”

The team will also be without forward Herb Jones, a key defensive player, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder.

Jones underwent an MRI on Thursday after exiting Wednesday night’s game against Portland.

Earlier this season, Jones missed 18 games due to a similar shoulder injury but had returned on December 5th, starting 16 consecutive games.

In the current season, Jones has participated in 20 of New Orleans’ 38 games, averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 steals in 32.4 minutes per game.
