The Green Bay Packers clinched a playoff berth with a commanding 34-0 shutout against the New Orleans Saints, marking the first shutout of the NFL season. Josh Jacobs showcased his skills once again, accumulating 107 yards from scrimmage and scoring a touchdown for the sixth consecutive game.
With this victory, Green Bay improved to 11-4, securing its fifth postseason appearance in six years. This shutout was particularly notable as it was their first since defeating the Seattle Seahawks 17-0 on November 14, 2021. The Saints, now at 5-10, faced the disappointment of being shut out for the first time since a 13-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on November 27, 2022.
The Saints struggled without their starting quarterback, Derek Carr, and star running back, Alvin Kamara. Rookie Spencer Rattler took the helm, completing 15 of 30 passes for 153 yards but also threw an interception and lost a fumble.
Green Bay’s victory margin was its largest since a dominant 55-14 win over the Chicago Bears on November 9, 2014. The Packers have been on a roll, winning nine of their last 11 games, with their only setbacks coming against the Detroit Lions, their NFC North rivals. They will enter the playoffs as a wild card after being knocked out of the NFC North title race the previous week.
Jacobs contributed significantly, rushing for 69 yards and a 2-yard touchdown on 13 carries, while also catching four passes for 38 yards. Quarterback Jordan Love completed 16 of 28 passes for 182 yards, including a touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks. Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson added to the score with 1-yard touchdown runs, and kicker Brandon McManus successfully made field goals from 55 and 46 yards.
Despite missing four defensive starters due to injuries, including linebacker Quay Walker and cornerback Jaire Alexander, the Packers’ defense stifled Rattler’s efforts. Safety Zayne Anderson made an impressive debut, recording an interception in his first career start.
The Packers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, setting the tone early in the game. Love connected with Wicks on a third-and-goal for the opening drive touchdown, marking Wicks’ fifth touchdown of the season and his first since October 20 against the Houston Texans.
Jacobs’ touchdown capped a lengthy 17-play, 96-yard drive that consumed 8:55 of game time, the longest possession for Green Bay this season. The drive featured two successful fourth-down conversions, showcasing the Packers’ determination to maintain control of the game.
Jacobs’ streak of scoring a touchdown in six straight games puts him just one shy of the Packers’ franchise record, held by Paul Hornung, who had a touchdown run in seven consecutive games in 1960.
Brooks’ first career touchdown extended the lead to 21-0 before halftime, while McManus added two field goals in the second half. Wilson rounded off the scoring with a touchdown late in the game, executed under the guidance of backup quarterback Malik Willis.
Injuries
The Saints faced further challenges as center Erik McCoy exited the game with an elbow injury, and left guard Lucas Patrick was hurt in the closing minutes. For the Packers, wide receiver Christian Watson suffered a knee injury.
Up next
The Saints will host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, while the Packers will travel to Minnesota for their next matchup.
