Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has opened the door for a potential move to the NFL after leading the Buckeyes to victory in the 2024 College Football Playoff. This championship marks a significant achievement for Day, who has spent six years building a powerhouse program in Columbus.
With a national title now in his grasp, many are left wondering if Day might pursue a coaching role in the NFL. “And that’s why I got into this game, was to do that and that’s what I want to do,” he stated, reflecting on his aspirations.
Before joining Ohio State, Day spent two seasons in the NFL as a quarterbacks coach, first with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 and then with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. Both positions were under head coach Chip Kelly, who now serves as Day’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State.
Day’s journey with the Buckeyes began in 2017 when he took on the role of co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Urban Meyer. He later became Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, stepping in as acting head coach for three games in 2018. Following Meyer’s retirement, Day was promoted to head coach for the 2019 season.
Despite facing a setback earlier in the season with a loss to the unranked Michigan Wolverines, Day’s team rallied in the 2024 College Football Playoff. Ohio State dominated the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers in the first round, triumphed over the No. 1 Oregon Ducks in the quarterfinals, narrowly defeated the No. 5 Texas Longhorns in the semifinals, and ultimately claimed victory against the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the National Championship.
Looking ahead, what does the future hold for Day and the Buckeyes? The goal is to build upon this success and aim for more championships.
Historically, Ohio State has a rich legacy in college football, with five of its nine championships won under legendary coach Woody Hayes (1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, and 1970). The other four titles were claimed by Paul Brown (1942), Jim Tressel (2002), Urban Meyer (2014), and now Day (2024).
The Buckeyes are set to return to the field on August 30, when they host the Texas Longhorns in the opening week of the 2025 college football season. This matchup will be a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s semifinal clash.
