Neymar confirms his return to Brazil, stating, “Only Santos can give me the love I need.” The renowned Brazil striker is set to sign a short-term contract with his childhood club, Santos, as he seeks to revitalize his career in preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
On Thursday, the 32-year-old Neymar announced his comeback to the São Paulo club, with reports indicating that the contract will last until June 30. This move marks a significant moment in his career, as he returns to the place where he first made his mark.
“Only Santos can give me the love that I need to prepare for the challenges I have in the next few years. All of you, no matter who you support, know well what I am talking about,” Neymar shared on his social media platforms. He expressed hope that fans would join him in this new chapter.
In response, Santos welcomed Neymar back through their social media channels, saying, “Your home awaits. Your people await.” This reunion comes nearly 12 years after he left Santos to join FC Barcelona, a pivotal moment in his career.
Neymar’s return follows the end of his contract with Al-Hilal, a Saudi Arabian club. After recovering from an ACL injury sustained while playing for Brazil, he had a brief stint with Al-Hilal, where he participated in just seven matches, scoring once.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, noted that Neymar’s return to Santos is a strategic move to regain form and confidence ahead of international competition.
Having played 225 matches for Santos previously, Neymar scored 138 goals, significantly contributing to the six titles he won with the club. Santos, once a dominant force in Brazilian football, faced relegation in 2023 but has since returned to the top division.
In 2017, Neymar made headlines when he became the most expensive player in soccer history, transferring from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million euros (approximately $262 million).
His last match was in November, as doubts about his fitness lingered under Al-Hilal’s coach, Jorge Jesus. Neymar’s exit from the Saudi league follows a challenging period, having played only seven games in 17 months since his high-profile move.
The Brazilian striker’s contract with Al-Hilal was set to expire after this year’s FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled between June 15 and July 13 in the United States. He had joined the Saudi club from PSG in August 2023 for 90 million euros ($94 million), reportedly securing one of the highest salaries in world soccer.
