Neymar Sets His Sights on the 2026 World Cup: “I’ll Do Whatever It Takes to Claim the Trophy!”

Neymar on 2026 World Cup: 'I am going after this trophy in any way I can'

Neymar is determined to pursue the World Cup trophy in any way he can. His recent return to Santos marks a significant chapter in his career, as he aims to reclaim his place among soccer’s elite while representing his boyhood club.

On Friday, the 32-year-old forward was met with an emotional welcome from thousands of Santos fans, celebrating his comeback with a concert at the Vila Belmiro Stadium. The electronic sign above the crowd proclaimed, “The prince is back,” highlighting the excitement surrounding his return.

Neymar signed a six-month contract, with the possibility of extension, signaling a fresh start after feeling discontented at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He expressed his readiness to play for Santos, potentially joining the match scheduled for Saturday if local soccer authorities grant permission.

The atmosphere at Vila Belmiro was electric, with around 20,000 enthusiastic fans braving the rain to celebrate Neymar’s return. His arrival was marked by a stunning fireworks display that capped off a three-hour fiesta, featuring performances from local artists.

“I am very happy. We lived great moments here. There’s still a lot that could come,” Neymar shared with the crowd, reflecting on his past experiences with the club.

During a media conference, Neymar discussed his family’s adjustment to life in Saudi Arabia but revealed that limited playing time following an ACL injury had driven his decision to return home. “Some decisions are not about soccer logic,” he remarked, emphasizing the emotional toll of training at Al-Hilal.

He described his return as a “rescue” for his soccer spirit, expressing gratitude to Santos for the opportunity. Neymar highlighted the significance of his six-month contract, stating, “Two weeks ago, I didn’t even think I would be here.”

As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 125 matches, Neymar is focused on achieving his goals, including the upcoming World Cup. “I am going after this World Cup trophy in any way I can,” he reiterated, showcasing his ambition and dedication.

Neymar’s private jet landed in São Paulo state earlier that day, but he opted for a few hours of rest before arriving in Santos by helicopter. Outside the stadium, fans eagerly purchased banners celebrating his return, available for 10 reais ($1.50).

In a social media video shared by Santos, Neymar donned Pelé’s iconic No. 10 jersey, a move that underscores the legacy he aims to uphold. “It will be an honor to wear this sacred jersey,” he stated with pride.

Following a mutual agreement, Al-Hilal terminated Neymar’s contract six months early after he played only seven matches and scored once since September 2023. The club acknowledged his struggles to perform at his previous level after recovering from injury.

Despite facing criticism during his exits from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar expressed hope for acceptance and support back home, where he is cherished by fans. Former teammates, including Luis Suárez and Andrés Iniesta, congratulated him on his return in a heartfelt video.

During his first tenure with Santos, Neymar played 225 matches, scoring 138 goals and contributing to six titles. His return is seen as a pivotal moment for the club, which faced challenges, including relegation in 2023 and a subsequent return to the top division.

“For us, Neymar’s return is a rebirth,” said local event producer Victor Hugo Arantes. “We weren’t expecting this. I think his heart spoke louder.” This sentiment resonates with many fans who believe Neymar’s presence can revitalize the club and the city.

Anderson Souza, a resident of Santos who does not support the club, echoed this hope. “Pelé died, the team was relegated, there was a lot of gloom. I hope he is bringing some energy back, people need it,” he remarked, emphasizing the high expectations fans have for Neymar’s performance.

Neymar reassured fans like Souza, stating, “I am not here to take a stroll, I didn’t come to stay home on my couch. I came after my happiness as a soccer player and to help Santos.”
