The New York Yankees have officially lifted their 49-year ban on beards, a policy that was originally enforced by the team’s former owner, George Steinbrenner.
Hal Steinbrenner, the current owner and son of Steinbrenner, made this announcement during the team’s spring training opener on Friday.
“In recent weeks, I have engaged with numerous former and current Yankees players from various eras to gather their insights on our long-standing facial hair and grooming policy,” Hal Steinbrenner stated.
He continued, “These discussions are part of an ongoing internal dialogue that has taken place over several years. Ultimately, the final decision rests with me, and after careful consideration, we will be updating our expectations to permit well-groomed beards for our players and uniformed staff. It feels like the right moment to move away from our previous policy.”
Just days prior, reminders had been placed on each player’s clubhouse chair, urging them to arrive clean-shaven for photo day. New closer Devin Williams, recently traded from Milwaukee, sported a beard during his photo session.
Outfielder Alex Verdugo, who joined the Yankees ahead of the 2024 season, had to cut his long hair when he was traded to the team.
