Nebraska’s spring game is now deemed “doubtful” due to concerns from head coach Matt Rhule about rival teams potentially attracting his players. This decision reflects a significant shift in the landscape of college football, where player retention is increasingly critical in the face of the transfer portal.
The spring game has been a time-honored tradition at Nebraska, drawing impressive crowds year after year. Last season, the event attracted 60,452 fans to Memorial Stadium, ranking fourth in attendance nationally behind notable programs like Ohio State, Alabama, and Penn State. The excitement surrounding the Cornhuskers’ game was further amplified by its broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
“I faced numerous offers for our players shortly after the game,” Rhule stated, highlighting the pressures of showcasing talent. “Why would I put our new recruits on display for everyone to see? It doesn’t make much sense.” This sentiment underscores the strategic challenges coaches now face in protecting their rosters.
Following last year’s spring game, six Nebraska players entered the transfer portal, indicating the heightened risks associated with such public events. The current spring portal period concludes on April 25, coinciding with the end of Nebraska’s spring practice. Notably, players can transfer without entering the portal, as seen with Wisconsin safety Xavier Lucas’s recent move to Miami (Fla.).
“Players are now receiving compensation, which adds a new layer of complexity,” Rhule explained. “It’s about safeguarding the roster during this portal period.” His focus on roster protection highlights the evolving dynamics of college athletics.
Although Rhule expressed skepticism about hosting a traditional spring game, he remains committed to finding a way to showcase his players. Athletic director Troy Dannen mentioned on his radio show that an alternative event is planned for April 26, which may include both football and other fall sports, ensuring fans still have an opportunity to engage with the team.
