Multiple teams are indeed interested in Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, but a trade remains “unlikely” before the upcoming 4 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday.
As reported by FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the 22-year-old quarterback’s recent benching in favor of veteran Joe Flacco has sparked inquiries from several franchises regarding a potential trade.
Richardson’s request to be substituted during the Colts’ Week 8 loss to the Houston Texans drew considerable criticism. However, head coach Shane Steichen clarified that the decision to bench Richardson was not solely based on that incident. He emphasized that he is not “giving up” on the young quarterback and believes starting Flacco is in the team’s “best interest,” as noted by NFL.com.
Drafted fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft from the University of Florida, Richardson has posted 958 passing yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions this season, with a passer rating of 57.2. His completion rate stands at an NFL-low 44.4%, having missed two games due to an oblique injury. Additionally, he has rushed for 242 yards and one touchdown.
Last season, Richardson faced challenges as well, playing only four games due to a head injury followed by a season-ending shoulder injury.
Interestingly, Richardson is not the only highly drafted quarterback facing scrutiny this season. Bryce Young, selected first overall, was benched by the Carolina Panthers after Week 2 but returned as the starter in Week 8 after Andy Dalton sustained a thumb injury.
The Colts, currently holding a 4-4 record and positioned second in the AFC South, will face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football in Week 9. The outcome of this game may further influence Richardson’s status and the team’s future decisions regarding their young quarterback.
