Luis Suarez signs to stay with Messi, Inter Miami for 2025 season

Luis Suarez has signed a one-year contract extension with Inter Miami, ensuring his presence alongside Lionel Messi for the 2025 season, as announced by the team on Wednesday.

While the financial details remain undisclosed, it is known that Suarez earned $1.5 million during his inaugural season with Inter Miami. The Uruguayan forward made a significant impact, scoring 20 goals in Major League Soccer regular season play, tying with Messi for the team lead, and achieving a total of 25 goals across all competitions.

This past season, Inter Miami set impressive MLS records, achieving 74 points and a winning percentage of .765. The team finished with a record of 22 wins, 4 losses, and 8 draws, earning the Supporters Shield. However, the club faced disappointment in the playoffs, being eliminated by Atlanta United in the first round of the best-of-three series.

Suarez’s extension at Inter Miami, where he will turn 38 in January, solidifies the team’s core of star players with ties to FC Barcelona. He shares the field with Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, all of whom have a history with the renowned Spanish club. Additionally, Javier Mascherano, the newly appointed Inter Miami coach, also played alongside this talented group at Barcelona.

Raul Sanllehi, the president of football operations for Inter Miami, expressed enthusiasm for Suarez’s contributions, stating, “In 2024, Luis brought to Inter Miami all of the elements that make him one of the greatest strikers of all time. He performed at an elite level for us, and we’re excited to see that continue next season. Luis was not only our leading scorer this season, but also a leader for the group. His impact cannot be understated.”

Suarez has a storied international career, representing Uruguay in four World Cup tournaments. His previous club experiences include stints at Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, where he earned numerous accolades, including Dutch Player of the Year, FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball, Premier League Player of the Season, and a spot on the World Cup All-Star Team.
