The LA Galaxy traded MLS Cup Final MVP Gastón Brugman to Nashville on Thursday, a surprising move just 12 days after the Uruguayan midfielder played a pivotal role in securing the club’s sixth league championship.
In exchange, the Galaxy acquired midfielder Sean Davis from Nashville, with the latter team agreeing to retain a portion of Davis’ salary budget charge for the upcoming season.
Brugman’s standout performance in the championship match earned him the MVP title, where he stepped up in the absence of injured star Riqui Puig, leading the Galaxy to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on December 7. His impressive long pass to Joseph Paintsil set the tone for the match, showcasing his ability to control the game from midfield.
Despite this triumphant finale, Brugman’s journey with the Galaxy had seen ups and downs. Initially a starter under coach Greg Vanney, he found himself primarily on the bench for much of the season, which raised questions about his long-term role within the team.
During his third season with the Galaxy, the 32-year-old Brugman recorded no goals and five assists. He totaled six goals and ten assists across 71 appearances for the club, often battling injuries that hindered his contributions.
Meanwhile, Sean Davis brings experience to the Galaxy, having scored five goals and provided 27 assists in 263 career MLS matches for both the Red Bulls and Nashville. Last season, he managed one assist in 25 games.
As part of the trade agreement, Nashville will receive $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from the Galaxy if Davis meets specific performance metrics, adding an incentive for both teams as they move forward in the league.
