Joel Embiid ejected with 2 technicals in game vs. Victor Wembanyama and Spurs

Joel Embiid, the standout center for the Philadelphia 76ers, was ejected during the first half of Monday night’s matchup against the San Antonio Spurs after receiving two technical fouls. This incident marked a frustrating moment in what has been a challenging season for the All-Star player.

Following his ejection, an infuriated Embiid rushed towards the referees, prompting teammate Kyle Lowry, coach Nick Nurse, and several staff members to intervene and restrain him, showcasing the emotional intensity of the game.

This season has been particularly trying for Embiid, who was participating in only his eighth game. He had missed several games due to left knee soreness, faced a three-game suspension for an altercation with a reporter, and was sidelined after suffering a sinus fracture on December 10. Monday’s game was significant as it marked just the fifth occasion that Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, the core trio of the Sixers, were all in the starting lineup together.

In his second game back from injury, Embiid donned a protective mask and recorded nine points and three rebounds in just over 14 minutes of play, shooting 2-for-8. The matchup against Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama was particularly anticipated, especially given their previous encounter. Last January, Embiid had an extraordinary performance, scoring a franchise-record 70 points in a 133-123 victory over San Antonio.

In that memorable game, Embiid made an impressive 24 of 41 field goals and 21 of 23 free throws, alongside 18 rebounds and five assists, while Wembanyama contributed 33 points. The contrast in performance on Monday was stark; Embiid initially displayed the same aggressive approach toward Wembanyama but struggled to find his rhythm, leading to his offensive foul and subsequent altercation with Dennis Schroeder.

It was a chaotic quarter, with Schroeder ejecting Philadelphia’s Andre Drummond for a foul on Wembanyama, only for that decision to be reversed after a video review. The officials initially assessed Wembanyama with a technical foul for flopping, but that decision was also rescinded, leading to a confusing sequence of events on the court.

Entering the game, Embiid had been averaging 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. The Sixers had struggled, holding a 2-5 record in the seven games he had participated in, emphasizing the challenges faced by the team this season.
