Ja’Marr Chase Declares Bengals the True AFC Contenders, Shifting the Spotlight from Chiefs!

Ja'Marr Chase says Bengals, not Chiefs, are the 'team to beat in the AFC'

Ja’Marr Chase asserts that the Cincinnati Bengals, not the Kansas City Chiefs, are the “team to beat in the AFC.” This declaration comes as the Bengals prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the reigning back-to-back Super Bowl champions. “We know it, and we gotta play like it, too,” he emphasized, showcasing his confidence in the team’s potential.

Chase expressed that he remains unfazed by the criticism following the Bengals’ unexpected loss to the New England Patriots in their season opener. Despite the defeat, he led the team with six receptions for 62 yards, highlighting his role as a key player.

In the lead-up to the regular season, Chase was in discussions for a contract extension, but an agreement was not reached. As a Pro Bowler for three consecutive seasons, he still has two years left on his rookie contract. Meanwhile, Tee Higgins, another standout receiver who surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in both 2021 and 2022, is currently playing under a one-year deal after being franchise-tagged by the Bengals in February.

Last season, the Bengals finished with a 9-8 record, missing the playoffs largely due to quarterback Joe Burrow’s wrist injury that ended his season prematurely in November. The team is determined to bounce back this year.

Cincinnati’s rivalry with Kansas City has intensified in recent years, with the Bengals boasting a 3-2 record in their last five encounters, including a postseason victory. However, their last meeting in Week 17 saw the Bengals fall to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, a game played without Burrow.

Chase believes the rivalry is authentic, stating, “The energy’s there [on] both sides.” He acknowledges the mutual dislike between the teams, suggesting that the competitive spirit is palpable. “There’s not really much we got to say now to this point. It’s been four years now, so everyone gets it,” he concluded.
