Jaguars unsure if QB Trevor Lawrence will be shut down after violent hit

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence faces uncertainty regarding his status after a brutal hit from Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair. The violent elbow to Lawrence’s facemask led to immediate chaos on the field, resulting in two sideline-clearing brawls. He was subsequently ruled out due to a concussion and did not return to the game.

After the game, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson mentioned that it was “too early” to determine if Lawrence would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, as reported by the Florida Times-Union.

The incident occurred during a second-quarter play when Lawrence was scrambling for a 6-yard gain. As he initiated a slide, Al-Shaair raised his forearm and struck the quarterback, leaving him vulnerable to the hit.

Following the hit, Lawrence exhibited the “fencing response,” a reflexive action often seen after a head injury, as he clenched his fists while lying on the ground. Teammates rushed to his aid, confronting Al-Shaair, whose actions may lead to disciplinary measures.

Eventually, Lawrence was assisted to his feet and placed in a cart for transport off the field. Fortunately, he was not taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

Daryl Johnston, a color analyst for FOX Sports, expressed outrage over the hit, labeling it a “cheap shot” that disrespects both the player and the integrity of the game.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans stated during halftime that the hit did not reflect the values of his team. Pederson echoed this sentiment, calling the action a “blatant hit” that has no place in professional football.

Following the first altercation, both Al-Shaair and Jaguars rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones were ejected from the game. Jones was seen pushing an official, while fans and veteran guard Brandon Scherff expressed their displeasure, igniting yet another confrontation.

Officials and coaches managed to restore order before the game resumed.

Earlier in the season, Al-Shaair faced a fine for a similar incident involving Bears running back Roschon Johnson, showcasing a pattern of aggressive play that raises concerns.

With Lawrence sidelined, Mac Jones stepped in as the quarterback, but the Jaguars were unable to overcome the Texans, ultimately losing 23-20.

This season has been challenging for Lawrence, who has already missed two games due to a shoulder injury. The Jaguars, now sitting at 2-10, will face the Tennessee Titans (3-9) next Sunday, as they aim to regroup and finish the season on a stronger note.
