Lou Lamoriello Announces Tommy Albelin as Assistant Coach
Today, New York Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello revealed the appointment of Tommy Albelin as an Assistant Coach. Albelin brings considerable experience, having spent the last eight seasons with Team Switzerland. His tenure included roles as an assistant for seven World Championship teams, seven World Junior Championship teams, and three Olympic teams. Notably, Albelin helped lead the Swiss to silver medals at both the 2024 and 2018 World Championships.
Before joining Switzerland’s national team, Albelin coached for eight seasons with the New Jersey Devils organization. He served as an assistant coach for New Jersey from 2007-08 to 2009-10, during which the Devils made the playoffs every season and secured two division titles. His coaching journey continued with the Albany Devils from 2010-11 to 2013-14 and saw him return to New Jersey in the 2014-15 season.
Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Albelin enjoyed a successful NHL playing career, amassing 952 games with the Quebec Nordiques, New Jersey Devils, and Calgary Flames from 1987-88 to 2005-06. As a defenseman, he participated in 81 playoff games, winning two Stanley Cup Championships with New Jersey in 1995 and 2003. Drafted by Quebec in the eighth round of the 1983 NHL Draft, Albelin also represented Sweden in two World Junior Championships and four World Championships.
