Pep Guardiola signs a two-year contract extension at Manchester City, setting his sights on adding more trophies to his impressive collection.
The City manager has put an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future, committing to a deal that will extend his remarkable tenure to 11 seasons.
Guardiola’s previous contract was set to expire at the conclusion of this season. The reigning Premier League champions made the announcement on Thursday.
“Manchester City holds a deep significance for me. This marks my ninth season here, and together we have shared countless unforgettable moments. My connection to this football club is truly special,” said Guardiola, who is 53 years old.
Since joining Manchester City in 2016, the Catalan coach has led the team through an era of extraordinary success. He has secured six Premier League titles in just seven years, alongside the prestigious Champions League, contributing to a total of 15 major trophies in his time at the club.
Under Guardiola’s leadership, City made history by becoming the first team to clinch four consecutive English league titles. He also guided the club to a historic treble in 2023, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in a single season, thereby matching Manchester United’s legendary achievement from 1999.
Guardiola’s decision to remain with the club comes amid ongoing allegations of financial misconduct against Manchester City, with potential penalties that could include expulsion from the league.
The club firmly denies these allegations, and Guardiola expressed his willingness to confront the situation in September, stating that he looks forward to clearing the club’s name. A verdict on the matter is not expected until next year.
Guardiola has now spent more time managing Manchester City than any of his previous clubs, having led Barcelona for four years and Bayern Munich for three.
City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed his delight at Guardiola’s contract extension.
“His relentless desire for improvement and success will continue to benefit our players and coaching staff, as well as the culture of our club and the broader English football landscape,” he stated.
“This renewal will take Pep beyond a decade of coaching Manchester City, allowing him to continue rewriting the record books of management.”
